Sony’s surprise launch of LEGO Horizon Adventures on Switch has an explanation

Sony’s LEGO Horizon Adventures will be available on PlayStation 5, PC, and (surprisingly) Nintendo Switch – and now we know why.

LEGO Horizon Adventures was officially confirmed to be coming back in June, set to be playable on PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Game developer Guerrilla Games offered a suitably vague ‘reason’ as to why the game wouldn’t be coming to Xbox but, reading between the lines, Sony and Microsoft have both been known to not host their in-company games on competitor consoles. We’ve seen it with the God of War series on PlayStation and Forza Horizon on Xbox, for example.

It was somewhat of a surprise to see that LEGO Horizon Adventures would be available on Switch but a fresh announcement around the release explains the choice. Sony itself won’t be publishing the game on Nintendo Switch, preferring instead to use a third party, Canadian company Solutions 2 GO.

“We are incredibly excited to partner with Sony Interactive Entertainment to bring LEGO Horizon Adventures to a global audience on the Nintendo Switch family of systems,” said Rob Cleva, VP Global Publishing at Solutions 2 GO, in a statement. “This partnership underscores our commitment to delivering high-quality entertainment experiences to retail consumers around the world.”

It’s not unheard of for Switch games to be adapted for the platform by third-party companies but it does make sense for a LEGO game. Considering it will surely be expected to pull in a lot of younger games, making it available on the cheaper, more child-friendly console option that is the Switch is a smart choice.

LEGO Horizon Adventures debuts on PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch later this year. Until then, read through 10 things we learned from the hands-on previews.
