10 ’80s IPs that could be a future LEGO Ideas set
The latest LEGO Ideas challenge is going to result in a new ’80s IP LEGO set, but only based on a select few movies and TV shows from the era.
You can now submit your entry into a new challenge that will see a new LEGO Ideas set released based on an IP new to the wider LEGO portfolio. The important detail is that the intellectual property must be one that the team has already approved for projects on the platform and not have been covered in a previous LEGO set.
This could include those from LEGO Dimensions, despite being listed on LEGO Ideas’ IP checker, removing The Goonies, Gremlins, E.T. and Knight Rider on top of Back to the Future, Tron and Seinfeld. We’ll look at other franchises in this list for further inspiration. Thankfully, there are quite a few properties still up for grabs.
Whether you are struggling for inspiration for the challenge or are curious to know how limited the selection of pre-approved IPs is, here are 10 that are eligible for the challenge and have not been covered in a previous LEGO set.
10 – Willow
A project based on the 2022 Willow series has already been proposed on LEGO Ideas but the franchise remains eligible for the challenge. The fantastical story would fit well with the likes of LEGO Castle and could lead to some interesting exclusive minifigures.
9 – Inspector Gadget
Inspector Gadget’s array of interesting vehicles and the many gadgets for which the character is named could make for a unique LEGO set, perhaps opting for a buildable figure instead of a minifigure-centric model.
8 – Little Shop of Horrors
The 1986 movie Little Shop of Horrors is ripe for a building-based LEGO Ideas model based on the flower shop. According to rumours, models based on musicals could be entirely feasible in the future too.
7 – My Neighbor Totoro
While LEGO Ideas only lists ‘Totoro’ as an approved license on the platform, the presence of many LEGO Ideas My Neighbor Totoro projects suggests that the animated movie stands a chance at finally becoming a LEGO set thanks to this challenge.
6 – Thundercats
What started with Legends of Chima could be leading to LEGO Thundercats thanks to this new challenge. The animated series is approved for projects on LEGO Ideas and has not received any models so far and it would be interesting to compare an official set next to similar builds from Legends of Chima.
5 – Who framed Roger Rabbit?
Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is surprisingly approved for projects on LEGO Ideas too and a smaller set featuring Benny the Cab and the cast as minifigures could be good inspiration for a challenge entry.
4 – Magnum P.I.
LEGO Magnum P.I. could be coming thanks to this new challenge. The ’80s series could do with a LEGO model featuring Thomas Magnum and the signature red Ferrari 308 GTS.
3 – Alf
While we’ve had LEGO E.T., LEGO Alf could take its place in this challenge. The character would almost certainly need a new minifigure, unless you want to try and impress the judges and LEGO Ideas users with a buildable Alf similar to 43249 Stitch
2 – Quantum Leap
Whether you want to recreate the Handlink or the Imaging Chamber, Quantum Leap is eligible for the LEGO Ideas challenge and the unique series could inspire an interesting LEGO set featuring many exclusive minifigures.
1 – The Smurfs
LEGO Smurfs is the most notable possibility from this challenge and one that may be the best inspiration for entries thanks to its colourful cast of characters that could be close to life-size as minifigures.

I would much prefer a Blade Runner set over all of these suggestions…
Unfortunately, Blade Runner is specifically not eligible for the challenge, as cool as a set based on it would be.
Interesting set of ideas, I’m sure there are plenty fans who would greatly appreciate their theme being made with Lego. We’ll see!
