LEGO SpongeBob SquarePants gets another chance through LEGO Ideas
The return of a classic LEGO licence could be on the cards in the next couple of years, as a huge SpongeBob SquarePants project has just reached 10,000 votes on LEGO Ideas.
Everyone’s favourite pineapple-dwelling cartoon character (a narrow field, to be fair) could well be making a comeback in the not-too-distant future – as long as the LEGO Ideas review board greenlights Lanko’s Krusty Krab build at the second time of asking. The Ideas user has already reached the review stage once before with the same subject matter, but the LEGO Group rejected the idea in the second 2022 review.
This slightly-revised version of the restaurant swaps out a boat mobile for the Patty Wagon, and now includes a total of 2,824 pieces. That would make it far and away the biggest LEGO SpongeBob SquarePants set to date, with the previous line – which ran from 2006 to 2012 – topping out at 579 pieces in 2006’s 3827 Adventures in Bikini Bottom.
It’s also a much bigger budget than was devoted to either of the official LEGO Krusty Krab sets during that time, including 3825 Krusty Krab (295 pieces, £19.99) and 3833 Krusty Krab Adventures (209 pieces, £24.99). But the LEGO Ideas theme is no stranger to rejuvenating childhood properties for nostalgic adults – hello Winnie the Pooh and Sesame Street – so an 18+ SpongeBob SquarePants set isn’t out of the question.
Besides, as LEGO Ideas Creative Lead Jordan Scott says, a big factor in a submission getting the green light is timing: so while this particular project has already been rejected once before, there’s nothing to say it couldn’t make the cut this time. We’ll find out for sure alongside the results of the second 2023 review, which will likely be announced early next year. Here’s every project in this round so far.

- I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
