What can a new LEGO set take from LEGO Horizon Adventures?

LEGO Horizon Adventures has been revealed following the first set based on the franchise, and there’s plenty a second could take from the title.

While the LEGO Group’s collaboration with Sony and Guerilla Games has only led to one physical model so far, the response to 76989 Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck has evidently been seen as successful as a LEGO Horizon video game has been officially revealed.

LEGO Horizon Adventures launches this holiday on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC and retells the story of Horizon with a distinct LEGO twist in gameplay that should remind you of the original LEGO games.

76989 Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck and its exclusive hair piece have been retired and no further LEGO Horizon sets are rumoured or confirmed at the time of writing. That said, a deluxe edition was reported for the game and the rest of the rumour has proven to be accurate.

Deluxe editions of LEGO games commonly include an exclusive minifigure and Aloy would be the ideal pick complete with her exclusive hair piece returning. Should this be plausible, the continued production of the only Horizon-specific element could be the perfect excuse for a second LEGO set based on the series, coincidentally tying into the new game.

Looking at the trailer and official screenshots of LEGO Horizon Adventures, it’s clear that there’s a lot a new LEGO Horizon build could take inspiration from.

At least one more minifigure

The trailer reveals that LEGO Horizon Adventures supports up to two players, one of which will control Aloy and the other her companion Varl. Varl is a major character across both Horizon games and – especially given the events of the sequel – it’s good to see him be playable here.

Varl’s minifigure in-game features dual-moulded legs and a new hair element but otherwise, there’s nothing that couldn’t realistically be achieved physically. A second LEGO Horizon set would do well to include Varl as a physical minifigure, or at least someone as well as Aloy for those who already own 76989 Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck.

New pieces

Varl and Aloy are both sporting new weapons using specialised elements. Whether either of these could realistically be recreated physically and be strong enough to play with is an important question though.

Aloy’s bow and spear in 76989 Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck used entirely existing elements and admittedly lacked details specific to the game. It appears that the team at Guerilla Games are willing to amend this in the digital space and it would be good to see this carried over to a physical model, should that even be possible.

A brick separator

76989 Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck includes a brick separator, as many models do, but the trailer reveals that it would make even more sense in a second LEGO Horizon set tying into the game.

A heavy attack that Aloy showcases in the trailer sees her take out an orange brick separator and slam it on the ground, damaging the machine that charges towards her. While this likely makes the game non-canon, it’s the kind of LEGO game comedy that could be easily recreated in either 76989 Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck or a new model by featuring a common and useful element.

A different machine…

76989 Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck has already provided us with a LEGO Tallneck and a Watcher but there are many more machines featured in the trailer that would be perfect for a second LEGO Horizon set.

These include a Shell-Walker, a Sawtooth and Broadheads. One of the most obvious picks for a second model from the trailer though is arguably the giant ThunderJaw with its mix of System and Technic elements.

… or a bigger Tallneck

Alternatively, since 76989 Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck is retired the LEGO Group could opt to bring the machine back to the portfolio via a larger and more accurately-sized model.

Such a build can be spotted twice in the trailer with a complex, but realistic assembly that is admittedly massive. It would be treading familiar territory for LEGO Horizon but it would equally be a chance to get the machine exactly right after the first model, at the cost of a higher price point.
