LEGO Star Wars Onyx Cinder is ‘hard to justify’ without its corresponding TV show
Set for August 1 release, LEGO Star Wars 75374 The Onyx Cinder is about to launch with so much as a trailer to show its on-screen inspiration.
While it’s now finally been revealed after popping up on retail shelves for weeks, 75374 The Onyx Cinder is about to go on sale on August 1, despite the fact that the TV show it’s based on has not yet been seen outside of a closer trailer screening. We’ve not had so much as a trailer of Skeleton Crew made publicly available and the Disney+ show has faced delays since it wrapped filming in January 2023.
This is a rarity for most licensed themes. While LEGO sets based on titles that have not yet come out are not new and are in fact relatively common among LEGO Marvel in particular, you usually have at least a trailer or some artwork to go off. There’s little of that around for Skeleton Crew, giving us no real anchor to judge 75374 The Onyx Cinder.
The first reactions to the upcoming LEGO Star Wars set reflect this lack of connection. An Instagram user reacting to the first official photos of the set commented: “The ship looks so cool, just hard to justify buying it when we don’t even know if the show is coming out.”
Another agreed, writing: “Actually a cool-looking ship. But worry the show will flop…”
This is certainly a possibility – and something that could affect the success of 75374 The Onyx Cinder moving forward. The Acolyte got mixed reviews from fans, scoring just 17% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Audience Score, despite scoring 80% on the Average Tomatometer (the more reliable scoring system that takes in general overview tone of reviews) and receiving generally favourable reviews from critics. It’s been theorised that the show was getting review-bombed due to following largely POC characters and centred around two women, although that’s hard to prove one way or another.
Regardless, it’s possible that the poor reception from fans will result in a lack of LEGO sets for The Acolyte, perhaps dying a similar death to the sequel trilogy. The same could then be said if 75374 The Onyx Cinder doesn’t sell well, even if the show ends up being a hit when it finally does air. If sales don’t prove it a success, it would be understandable for the LEGO Group not to produce more sets based on the Disney+ show.
The delay from Disney’s side doesn’t take away from the fact that 75374 The Onyx Cinder is an impressive LEGO Star Wars ship in its own right, with a cool silhouette, ample interior, and all-new minifigures. We can only hope that, if the show does prove popular, 75374 The Onyx Cinder’s potentially slow start doesn’t put the LEGO Group off from doing more sets based on the show.
