Game, set and match: LEGO Ideas tennis court scores 10,000 supporters

A LEGO Ideas project anchored around a tennis match has scored 10,000 supporters – but there’s more to this build than just the court…

To date, the LEGO Group has only really dipped its toes into tennis with a handful of Collectible Minifigures and a few token courts (or some semblance thereof) in a smattering of LEGO Friends sets. But that could all be about to change thanks to LEGO Ideas veteran Pablo Sánchez’s latest project to hit 10,000 votes, The Tennis Match.

If you’ve been paying attention to LEGO Ideas for any considerable length of time, you’ll probably recognise Pablo’s name. Known as Bricky_Brick on the crowdsourcing platform, he’s taken no fewer than 20 different projects to the review stage, including any number of modular buildings, and has so far seen one set get the green light in 2020’s 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay.

He’ll now be hoping his tennis project will unlock the door to his second official LEGO set – but this pitch involves more than just a rectangular court with a net. (That probably wouldn’t make for a very exciting product on its own, after all.) In fact, it’s actually another LEGO modular building in its own right, built across a series of baseplates that host the same trappings as the official LEGO Modular Buildings Collection (pavements, lampposts and so on).

The tennis court sits on a 32×32-stud baseplate while an adjoining gym occupies a 16×32-stud baseplate. The 64-stud-wide layout is then topped off with a pond and garden area on a second 16×32-stud baseplate. Details scattered throughout the build include a bench, scoreboard, chess table and more, while the second storey of the building houses an apartment with two balconies. There’s also a garden van included to trim the trees.

All this may be for nought if the LEGO Group continues to outright reject modular buildings that make it to 10K, although one has slipped through in Valentina Bima’s Botanical Garden. Whether that opens the doors for more will likely hinge on whether the LEGO Ideas team maintains its proposed compatibility with modular buildings for the finished product.

For now, The Tennis Match advances to the second 2024 review, hot on the heels of projects inspired by Gravity Falls and Bob Ross. Check out the full list of potential sets in this round in the table below.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
