LEGO Wednesday 76781 Wednesday & Enid’s Dorm Room review

The only location-based LEGO Wednesday set recreates the girls’ dorm room, but is it a hit or a miss?

Where the other two LEGO sets based on Wednesday are intended for display, LEGO Wednesday 76781 Wednesday & Enid’s Dorm Room is the only location-based build. It uses its 750 pieces to recreate perhaps the most often seen set in the show: the girls’ dorm room.

We’ve got our hands on 76781 Wednesday & Enid’s Dorm Room ahead of release and have put all four mini-dolls, Thing, and the various accessories through their paces. Read on to find out whether there’s enough meat on these bones to make it worth picking up in October…

One location, plenty of play opportunities

While only one room from the Wednesday series is depicted in this set and indeed the entire theme, with the other two sets featuring only figures, the choice to visit Wednesday and Enid’s dorm room leaves a lot of opportunities to recreate scenes and play out scenarios with the characters. The Netflix show spends a lot of time in this room, so it’s a savvy choice to get a lot of bang for your buck despite only depicting one spot.

That’s helped by the wealth of accessories included in the build. The split down the middle is executed perfectly, separating the two girls’ personalities. It’s most clearly seen through the fantastic window element, with one half colourful stained glass and one half spider-webbed and monochrome. Enid’s side arguably has more going on, but that fits with her style, stacked with posters, cuddly toys, and vibrant colours.

That doesn’t leave Wednesday’s side feeling bland, however. Her typewriter and cello are present, which is all she really needs at the end of the day. There are also nods to the plot of the series, thanks to the murder mystery theory board, which also offers a handy spot for Thing to sit on. Thing himself is an excellent inclusion, able to perch anywhere that there’s studs. Considering his habit to appear whenever Wednesday least expects it, that works well as a subtle but effective play function.

Despite the mini-dolls, the set feels adult

We’ve been discussing play options and the presence of those alongside mini-dolls might lead you to think this is only a set for younger builders. It surely will appeal to children but there’s a lot to love as an adult too.

If you’re a fan of Netflix’s Wednesday, all four mini-dolls and the entirety of the set are a faithful recreation of the show. It can do everything a detailed LEGO Icons set can do and looks good enough on display to stand its ground alongside other movie-inspired LEGO sets. Every inch of the set screams Nevermore Academy and you know exactly where you are from the very beginning of the build.

All the markers of a LEGO-focused set – engaging build experience, strong display possibilities, and authentic attention to detail – are present in this set. It might not be the most complex of builds, but if you can overcome some anti-mini-doll bias, it’s a worthy set for anyone who’s looking for something to do while rewatching Wednesday.

The nostalgic nod to Polly Pocket works wonders

The only section of the build that might feel less mature is the drawers at the base – but for anyone who played with Polly Pockets at some point in their lives, it comes with a healthy dose of nostalgia. A button on the side of the build releases the drawers, so there’s no sliding out randomly when you’re arranging the set. The accessories and mini-dolls within are also well-secured, marking a clever way to include even more in 76781 Wednesday & Enid’s Dorm Room.

With this set presumably geared (although not exclusively) towards women, the target demographic for the Netflix show as well, the homage to old-school toys for girls doesn’t go unnoticed. While it’s a fun play function and smart storage solution for the set, it also serves to draw in people who remember similar toys from childhood and adds another reason why 76781 Wednesday & Enid’s Dorm Room is sure to appeal to adults just as much as children.

What’s more, the option to have four mini-dolls rather than just two expands the possibilities for the dorm room. The day-time mini-dolls can be trying to solve the murder and going to classes; the rave mini-dolls can be preparing for Wednesday’s iconic viral dance and getting ready together ahead of the Nevermore ball. It widens the scope of the set in a way that feels like you’re getting plenty of brick for your buck.
