LEGO Star Wars 25th anniversary film festival open for submissions

The LEGO Star Wars 25th anniversary film festival is now open for submissions, and the LEGO Group has cooked up some incredible inspiration for budding filmmakers.

As part of its celebrations of the LEGO Star Wars theme’s 25th anniversary, the LEGO Group is hosting a 25-second film festival, which will be comprised of – you guessed it – LEGO films that are 25 seconds long. Whether you’re a veteran LEGO filmmaker or just have a smartphone, some bricks and an idea, the LEGO Group wants you to get involved.

You’ve got until April 22 to submit your 25-second film. The LEGO Star Wars team will then curate a mix of clips for the final film festival, which premieres on May 4, 2024. If your film is chosen, you’ll see it featured on the official LEGO YouTube channel between May 4 and 25. There are no other prizes or winners – the LEGO Group stresses it isn’t a competition – but every entrant will gain access to exclusive digital rewards just for throwing their film into the ring.

If you’re looking for some inspiration, check out the landing page for the LEGO Star Wars 25th anniversary celebrations. There you’ll find the LEGO Group’s launch film – which sees Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca and Ben Kenobi introduce the film festival through a mash-up of different visuals – and a series of short but sweet clips the company has commissioned ‘to get the ball rolling’, envisioned by a mix of individual creators, LEGO fan filmmakers and professional studios.

They present a relatively high bar to reach, but a handful of creators have also provided plenty of tips for wannabe filmmakers – from how best to use lighting to the easiest way to plan out your film. There are also a couple of behind-the-scenes clips from the commissioned films to get stuck into.

The LEGO Group advises reading the rules for the film festival before submitting your entry, but the only visible rule on the landing page is that you can’t use unlicensed music and sound effects. (The link to the rules just sends you in an eternal loop on the landing page at the moment.) The good news is that the LEGO Star Wars team has provided a bank of sounds you can use in your film, available to download from LEGO.com.

Head over to the LEGO Star Wars 25-second film festival page to learn more and submit your entry before April 22, and click here to learn more about the LEGO Star Wars 25th anniversary celebrations.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
