Could the BrickLink Designer Program LEGO modular building rules affect LEGO Ideas?

The BrickLink Designer Program has banned modular buildings for the foreseeable future and this could affect LEGO Ideas too.

Don’t expect to see any more modular buildings in the future BrickLink Designer Program series as the latest guidelines update has prohibited several models, including any that evoke the style of the LEGO Icons range.

Considering the huge number of modular building projects submitted in each series, this is a massive change for the BrickLink Designer program. There is a similarly vast number of modular buildings on LEGO Ideas and this implies that an update to the LEGO Ideas guidelines to prohibit such builds isn’t out of the question.

Both are fan-driven platforms that lead to official sets, but the key difference is that one’s models are available widely on shelves and the others’ are made available only via crowdfunding.

Either way, the update to the BrickLink Designer Program suggests that the LEGO Group doesn’t want too many models to be compatible with the official modular buildings range, but there are exceptions.

The three Marvel modular buildings may not be part of the LEGO Icons range but they have been designed to sit alongside them. Similarly, LEGO Ideas has a botanical garden project being transformed into a set and its proposed project was designed to fit next to the official modular buildings too.

The result of the latter has yet to be revealed, and it could yet become a standalone botanical garden. This would be a major departure from the initial project though. The final design could provide an answer as to what will happen to modular buildings on LEGO Ideas in the future.

While the BrickLink Designer Program has prohibited modular buildings for the foreseeable future, it’s business as usual on LEGO Ideas for now. Take this as a lesson that this could change at any time as evidenced by the sudden update to Series 6’s guidelines though.

Given the similarities between LEGO Ideas and the BrickLink Designer Program, the LEGO Group may be planning on sticking to just Marvel and Icons for the modular buildings concept officially. In the meantime, the upcoming LEGO Ideas botanical garden set is rumoured for later this year.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
