Can LEGO Star Wars still surprise fans in 2024?

After 25 years of LEGO Star Wars, surprises from the designers are getting trickier and trickier to achieve – if possible at all.

There’s plenty of inspiration from a galaxy far, far away to feed into LEGO Star Wars sets, spanning decades worth of films and the more recent flurry of TV shows and animated series. That’s not to mention the 2024 sets that are based on an animated LEGO series similar to Marvel’s What If…? called Rebuild the Galaxy, creating fresh fodder for builds.

However, the fact is that after 25 years of making LEGO Star Wars sets, it is undeniably hard to return to the same original content and come up with a LEGO set that offers something new every time. Sure, you can dive into some of the lesser-known ships and locations but in terms of appealing to the wider audience, it’s the Falcons, the X-Wings, the TIE Fighters, and so on that are going to pull in larger amounts of attention.

Brick Fanatics‘ own Matthew has been pondering the conundrum that LEGO Star Wars is up against, striking that balance between subverting our expectations and still delivering a desirable set. I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
