Daisy Ridley reveals her new Star Wars movie is, “Not what I expected”

In a new interview, Daisy Ridley has revealed some tantalising details of her return as Rey Skywalker in an upcoming Star Wars film.

A number of new movie projects were announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023 in April, including a surprise reveal of Daisy Ridley’s return to a galaxy far, far away. Lucasfilm confirmed that the actor would be back as Rey in a film from director Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy set 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

Beyond the news that Rey would return to rebuild a new Jedi order through her own academy, no additional details on the project have been forthcoming since then. However, Ridley has now been dropping hints as to what fans might expect (or not) from her new Star Wars film, with some surprising revelations about the role.

During a promotional interview with Collider for her new movie The Marsh King’s Daughter, the actor discussed how her return as Rey came about and the possibility of her starring in more than one upcoming Star Wars film.

“No one knew I was going to Celebration, bar like Kathy (Kennedy),” said Ridley, “and there were a couple of people. I was so nervous. Oh my God. It was such a wonderful reception. I’m very excited. The story is really cool. I’m waiting to read a script because, obviously, I don’t have any other updates. It’s not what I expected, but I’m very excited.”

Ridley went on to discuss what else she did know about the upcoming Star Wars movie and whether or not her film might be a one-off or the start of more cinematic outings for the character.

“I know the storyline for one film,” she said. “That’s not to say that that’s all it is, but that’s what I was told about. And I imagine it will be the next film, I think. I mean, again, I don’t know, post strikes and everything, how quickly everything will start up again. But yes, so far, I know the story of one film and I think people will be very excited.”

There’s currently no confirmed release date for Ridley’s or any other Star Wars films but multiple Lucasfilm projects are now under the guidance of The Mandalorian co-creator Dave Filoni, who has recently been confirmed as Chief Creative Officer of Lucasfilm.
