Ex-designer weighs in on LEGO Ideas 21351 The Nightmare Before Christmas

LEGO Ideas 21351 The Nightmare Before Christmas has been revealed and a former designer has shared their thoughts on one piece specifically.

Earlier today, 21351 The Nightmare Before Christmas was revealed, inspired by Simon Scott’s project which reached 10,000 supporters and was approved for an official set. While the wider community reacts to the build, the most insightful comment comes from a previous LEGO designer.

Former LEGO designer James May has weighed in on LEGO Ideas 21351 The Nightmare Before Christmas, sharing that he worked on the initial sketch model of the fan-inspired build. He was specifically intrigued by the moon before being informed by TTHBLOX that it isn’t just for the box art.

Looking at official images, we can tell that this moon is a physical element attached to the back of the build which is substantially thinner than standard pieces. It’s a clever effect that helps set the scene and it wasn’t proposed in the initial project.

We might have May to thank for the flat moon element in 21351 The Nightmare Before Christmas as they share that they were eager to include such a piece in the set before leaving the LEGO Group.

The hope was that by foregoing a brick-built moon, there wouldn’t be inconsistencies in the colouration as there are said to be in 10271 Fiat 500. At the very least, there would have been small gaps between the pieces for enthusiasts to notice while building. Looking at the lifestyle images, the flat moon element creates an impressive and worthwhile effect.

We’ll know more about this new moon piece when 21351 The Nightmare Before Christmas launches on September 3 for LEGO Insiders or September 6 widely in LEGO Stores and online. You can read more about the set by clicking here.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
