First details on LEGO Pixar shorts from D23 – Incredibles, Cars and more

Pixar has announced five new LEGO Bricktoons short films are in the works, hooked to classic animated movies including The Incredibles and Finding Nemo.

Disney hasn’t published an official press release for the new series of short films, but X user stitchkingdom live-tweeted Pixar’s LEGO panel at this year’s D23 Expo, in which the animation studio revealed a first look at the five different Bricktoons. They’re based on Pixar films including Cars, Brave, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo and Coco, and will seemingly be fresh spins on the franchises rather than recreating specific existing scenes.

The clips will combine hand-painted backgrounds with animated LEGO models, some of which are lifted directly from LEGO sets – like Nemo and Squirt from 43226 Disney Duos – while others have been designed and pieced together specifically for this project, such as the Pizza Planet truck (which appears in both the Cars and Incredibles Bricktoons).

Given the very limited coverage around this panel, there’s seemingly no word yet on when or where you’ll be able to watch these shorts (whether it was announced during the show or not). We’ll hopefully learn more about the LEGO Disney Pixar Bricktoons in the weeks and months ahead, or perhaps even later this week if the House of Mouse decides to put out a press release.

Back in the world of regular Pixar features, the studio announced projects including The Incredibles 3, Toy Story 5 and Hoppers – which sees animal lover Mabel transfer her consciousness to a robotic beaver – alongside an Inside Out spin-off series titled Dream Productions. Given the LEGO Group’s close relationship with Pixar, any or all of those could provide a basis for new LEGO sets over the next few years. The safe money’s on the sequels, though.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
