Guess how many pieces make up this life-size LEGO Ferrari 296 GTS

A life-size LEGO Ferrari 296 GTS is about to race into LEGOLAND Florida, and the park wants you to guess how many pieces it includes.

Built to commemorate LEGOLAND Florida’s new Ferrari-themed attraction – which follows in the tyre tracks of similar experiences at LEGOLAND California, Billund and Windsor – the life-size 296 GTS took 10 people roughly 1,850 hours (or more than 77 days) to assemble. And save for its alloys, tyres and steering wheel (plucked from a real 296 GTS), the incredible model is composed entirely of LEGO bricks.

That’s a lot of plastic – and a lot of weight. In fact, the LEGO Ferrari 296 GTS is roughly 30% heavier than its real-world equivalent, coming in at 2,000kg in total. The driveable 296 GTS has a dry weight of ‘just’ 1,539kg. But while you won’t be putting the pedal to the metal in the LEGO car, it does boast working headlights, tail lights and licence plate illumination.

It’s got a complete interior too, decked out in black and tan, while a brick-built twin-turbo V6 engine can be seen through the rear window (or where the window would be if this car had any glass). LEGOLAND hasn’t revealed how many pieces were used to create it, though: that’s apparently for you to guess over on the park’s social channels.

In a YouTube video revealing the Ferrari, a LEGOLAND Florida staffer identified only as ‘Banks’ invites guests to head over to the LEGOLAND Florida Instagram page and guess how many pieces the car includes before the park reveals the actual number. Whether this is a formal contest or just a fun game isn’t clear at this stage, nor whether the park plans to publish a dedicated post for people to guess, but nobody’s taken a swing at it so far.

For reference, previous life-size LEGO cars – such as the Ferrari Monza SP1, Ferrari F40 and Kia EV6 – have weighed in at anywhere between 350,000 and 400,000 pieces, so you could try somewhere in that ballpark. (The working life-size LEGO Bugatti Chiron includes over 1 million Technic pieces, but 2,304 of those are motors to get it to work. The 296 GTS is far more static.)

You’ll be able to check out the life-size LEGO Ferrari 296 GTS (but perhaps not count all the individual pieces) for yourself at LEGOLAND Florida from March 8, when the new LEGO Ferrari Build & Race attraction opens to the public.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
