Look to the history of LEGO Modular Buildings for clues of the future

The next LEGO modular building is rumoured to be coming later this year and a familiar pattern across the collection could offer clues to what it is.

Rumours reported by Polish fan site FanKlockow, via brick_clicker, state that a LEGO Icons set with the set number 10350 is due for release on December 1, suggesting that the next modular building will be released in December rather than January for the second year running. Details, even rumoured ones, about the annual set are few and far between at the moment but one redditor, Merman101, has spotted a familiar pattern that could offer a hint of what to expect for the next in the series.

LEGO modular buildings have always featured corner sets every third set in the collection, ever since the sub-theme’s inception. The first was 10182 Cafe Corner in 2007, followed by 10211 Grand Emporium in 2010, 2013’s 10232 Palace Cinema, 2016’s 10251 Brick Bank, 2019’s 10264 Corner Garage, and 2022’s 10297 Boutique Hotel.

Seeing as we’ve had two more LEGO modulars since 10297 Boutique Hotel10312 Jazz Club and 10326 Natural History Museum – we’re now due another corner block, if the LEGO Group continues to follow its long-running pattern.

What that corner might hold still remains to be seen. We’ve had everything from a hotel and a cinema to a bank and a parking garage, so there’s no real rhythm to what the set includes. We already outlined hopes for an inverted corner when we were speculating about 10326 Natural History Museum but that didn’t end up coming true – so perhaps this year is the charm.

An inverted corner would make it easier for collectors of modular buildings to wrap around corners, offering more flexibility for display, rather than needing to line up your modulars in one long row. It also offers a more varied structure – but that comes at a space cost. As tested out in custom builds, inverted corners tend to work best on double or at least 1.5 baseplates, like those used for 10326 Natural History Museum and 10255 Assembly Square.

Seeing as we got a larger baseplate just last year with 10326 Natural History Museum, it’s perhaps less likely to get an upsized modular building two years in a row. Of course, never say never – but we’ll have to wait until we get an official reveal from the LEGO Group before we even know whether a corner is on the way at all, inverted or no.
