Key takeaways from the new LEGO family collection

There’s a new collection of LEGO sets on the horizon and while the name has yet to be confirmed, we’re already learning a lot about the range.

Some of the most recent LEGO reveals have a few features and details in common, indicating that they’re part of the same collection and there are a few key takeaways to point out between the duo.

While 41838 Travel Memories has yet to be officially listed on LEGO.com, its initial listing on German online retailer Alternate listed it for release in October. 41839 Message Board has been fully revealed and will be released on August 1 for LEGO Insiders, before going on sale on August 4 for everyone.

The box art for both builds features similar designs and colour schemes and there’s little doubt that they’re part of the same collection. That collection is rumoured to be called LEGO Family but there’s no official confirmation of such a theme at the time of writing. Though family is a major focus of both builds.

While we wait for 41838 Travel Memories to be officially listed, here are a few things we spotted between these two upcoming LEGO sets.

Build Together is sticking around

Build Together has been notably common in all manner of LEGO models since its debut in 2021 and allows multiple people to build a single set at the same time. Both 41838 Travel Memories and 41839 Message Board have integrated the feature into their assembly process.

The brick-built map can be assembled in four sections while a fifth person builds the small vehicles and the World Wonderliner jet while 41839 Message Board is ideal for multiple people building at once with modules that can be attached together and then customised further.

Customisation is encouraged

Customisation is a big part of both sets, encouraging creativity in the new collection. 41838 Travel Memories encourages this via a collection of small printed tiles to map out where your family has been in the past and hopes to travel to in the future.

41839 Message Board similarly features a variety of printed tiles with symbols representing food, emotions and more to decorate the displayed wording as you wish.

Retired sets live on in the range

41839 Message Board carries on the concept first introduced in 41951 Message Board and 41952 Big Message Board from the retired LEGO DOTS. The buildable lettering that can be customised is all too familiar for longtime LEGO enthusiasts.

In the same way, 41838 Travel Memories can be hung on a wall and the included pins for remembering past and future trips make it a close match to 31203 World Map. It’s clear that carrying on the legacy of retired LEGO models is an important part of this collection, whether by coincidence or on purpose from the design team.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
