LEGO Ideas 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale officially revealed

The LEGO Group has officially revealed the 56th LEGO Ideas set, 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale, which celebrates 50 years of the tabletop roleplaying game.

Swords, dice and character sheets at the ready: 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale is conjuring its way on to shelves on April 1 for LEGO Insiders (and April 4 for everyone else), turning fan designer Lucas Bolt’s concept into a bold and bright 3,745-piece set. It’s the first-ever LEGO Dungeons & Dragons model, and comes off the back of a LEGO Ideas contest devised in collaboration with D&D publisher Wizards of the Coast.

The final model includes all the hallmarks of Lucas’s design and then some, from the tavern with a removable roof to the tower, dungeon and – of course – the dragon, which has swapped from green to red during the design process. The model is accompanied by six minifigures – an Orc rogue, Elf wizard, Dwarf cleric, Halfling fighter, Alax Jadescales the Dragonborn and Ervan Soulfallen the human – along with three skeletons and a host of brick-built monsters, such as a Beholder and a Gelatinous Cube.

“The Dungeons & Dragons theme combined with my love of history, fantasy and making games, inspired me to create a playable layout with different challenges and routes to explore,” Lucas said. “I had so much fun designing this piece, and it is a real privilege seeing my design developed into a detailed LEGO set to celebrate 50 years of the iconic game.”

The LEGO Group and Wizards of the Coast are going all-out for the launch of 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale. A Mimic Dice Box will be available free exclusively with purchases of the set from April 1 to 7 (or while stocks last), and a Dungeons & Dragons adventure book – complete with character sheets, digital dice and more – will be available to download at LEGO.com and through D&D Beyond from April 1.

“Lucas’s design perfectly captured the storytelling excitement of any Dungeons & Dragons game,” added LEGO Ideas Design Manager Jordan Scott. “Working with the Wizards of the Coast team, we were able to build on his design to co-create a truly authentic Dungeons & Dragons experience full of details that will excite fans through the building process and beyond.”

The LEGO Group has also confirmed in the press release for 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale that a D&D Collectible Minifigures series is on the way in September, though has provided no further details. For now, you’ll be able to buy 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale from April 1 (if you’re part of the LEGO Insiders program) for £314.99 / $359.99 / €359.99.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
