LEGO Art 31209 The Amazing Spider-Man officially revealed

The LEGO Group has unveiled its latest LEGO Art set 31209 The Amazing Spider-Man, which will see your friendly neighbourhood web-slinger crawl straight on to the walls of your home.

Coming in at 2,099 pieces – see what they did there? – 31209 The Amazing Spider-Man leaps beyond the boundaries of a traditional LEGO Art set, blending a white frame with a textured build that sees Spidey’s hands and head pop from the picture. The web-slinger is posed crawling down the canvas, which is decorated in shades of green and splattered with white webs for contrast.

It’s a dynamic portrait of the Marvel superhero, who makes his LEGO Art debut in 31209 The Amazing Spider-Man, and feels like the natural next step in the theme’s design journey. We’ve had flat mosaics in white-bordered frames, we’ve had textured builds in sets like 31206 The Rolling Stones, and we’ve had both those concepts together in 31208 Hokusai – The Great Wave. Spidey builds on those sets by allowing the superhero to escape the confines of his frame.

According to the set’s press release, the superhero’s head and fingers can be repositioned and posed in different ways, while the backdrop is designed to pay homage to the comic book’s Ben-Day-dot printing technique. There are also 15 LEGO spiders dotted around the image, referencing Spider-Man’s debut in the pages of Amazing Fantasy #15 in 1962.

Further details include a printed ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ tile in the bottom right corner, while the product description suggests there’s also a printed graphic with the quote: “With great power there must also come great responsibility.” That doesn’t appear to be pictured anywhere, though, and the LEGO Group has yet to confirm whether it’s a hidden bonus in the box or an error in the press release.

We’ll find out one way or the other once we have our hands on the set. 31209 The Amazing Spider-Man launches August 1 for £169.99 / $199.99 / €199.99.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
