LEGO Wednesday 76780 Wednesday Addams Figure review

We got hands-on with LEGO Wednesday 76780 Wednesday Addams Figure to see how accurately Netflix’s Wednesday translates into a brick-built version of the titular character.

76780 Wednesday Addams Figure is the latest in a long line of buildable characters from across various LEGO themes. With two possible versions of Wednesday Addams to build, one in her everyday outfit and one in her dance-ready Rave’N dress, it offers both play and display options with articulated arms and a posable head.

Read on for our thoughts on 76780 Wednesday Addams Figure, from the tips of her plaits to her chunkily built feet.

Like a BrickHeadz – but more

While building 76780 Wednesday Addams Figure, it’s hard to ignore the question of why it’s actually necessary. We already have LEGO BrickHeadz 40750 Wednesday & Enid if you want a buildable figure of the iconic character – and at a much cheaper price.

76780 Wednesday Addams Figure is undoubtedly more detailed and that’s a pleasure while working on the build. The hair, in both its versions, is intricately designed and it’s fun to see the layers of varied black elements slowly come together to create either her signature plaits or the more complex up-do from the Nevermore ball.

However, while the buildable figure in 76780 Wednesday Addams Figure is more detailed and more expressive than a BrickHeadz could ever be, the end result is somewhat cartoonish. It’s hard to see who this is for: is it for younger builders to play with like a doll? In that case, you’d hope for more articulation through the legs and torso, rather than largely just the arms.

Is it a display model for adult fans of the show? Then you’d be looking for a less cartoonish model that’s just as detailed as the stand she’s displayed on. At that end, you’re left with a set that straddles both demographics but doesn’t quite hit either.

The stand outshines the figure

If nothing else, the brick-built stand manages to outshine the buildable figure it’s designed to showcase. Every inch is covered in details, a particular favourite being the transparent dark grey flowers. There are nods to Wednesday’s life, including the traumatising death of her pet scorpion, Nero, and her time at Nevermore through the typewriter.

The base feels like it has more thought and design consideration than the figure herself – and that’s saying something seeing as the buildable character comes in two different versions. When thinking about display options, it’s more tempting to perch the LEGO Wednesday BrickHeadz on this immaculately designed stand than it is the figure that it comes with.

Two figure options becomes more fiddly than fun

The LEGO Group’s recent penchant for offering multiple build options in one set is alive and well in 76780 Wednesday Addams Figure, with the option of building the figure in Wednesday’s school outfit and her iconic Rave’N dress. The latter is the more detailed of the two, with buildable layers making up the skirt of the dress that makes for an impressive look.

The downside of having these two options is that it’s not easy to switch between the two. Perhaps that’s only an issue for reviewing purposes, where we wanted to build both options, but it doesn’t feel out of the realms of possibility that the average LEGO fan would want to build both options at some point too. Indeed, the LEGO designers seem to be encouraging this, providing drawers to put the spare parts for rebuilding later on.

If you do choose to do that, prepare for a fiddly process of deconstructing and trying to find parts. Both versions use some parts from bag five, meaning it’s not a matter of simply taking off the torso and skirt and rebuilding the hair. Instead, you need to completely deconstruct the figure of Wednesday, or at least it seems that way. There’s no indication in the instructions of a shortcut to swapping out the two outfits, meaning it’s a cumbersome task that leaves a sore taste in the mouth at the end of the build.

Presumably, including enough pieces to easier swap between the two outfits might have hiked up the price and £44.99 / $49.99 / €49.99 is already not cheap for what you get. Still, it feels like the LEGO Group should have committed to the two-build option fully by making it easier to flip between Wednesday’s two looks.

Honest opinion: It’s hard to imagine who this is best suited for and, while some design elements work well, the two figure options could have been executed better.
