Open your eyes… wake up. The long wait is over and the LEGO Group and Nintendo have finally delivered the first set based on The Legend of Zelda. But is it everything we’ve always wanted?

Expectations for 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 are at an all-time high. Over the years, countless Zelda-themed builds have been submitted to the LEGO Ideas platform, with many reaching the coveted 10,000-supporter milestone, yet none have made it to production. Fans had nearly given up hope that an official The Legend of Zelda set would ever be released. But now that it’s here, the question remains: will 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 earn a rightful place in the Sacred Realm, or should it be sealed away in the Dark World for eternity?

Hey, listen!’

Beyond its iconic moustachioed mascot Mario, no gaming franchise has been as successful for Nintendo as The Legend of Zelda. First debuting on the Japanese Famicom in 1986 (and released in North America and Europe a year later), the original game pushed the boundaries of what was possible on an 8-bit system, delivering a groundbreaking experience for players. Since then, the series has seen 21 entries (excluding remakes), each continuing to push the limits of video game innovation. The two games that inspire this set, Ocarina of Time and Breath of the Wild, are widely hailed as among the greatest video games ever made.

Nintendo is famously protective of its IPs, but with LEGO, The Legend of Zelda is in safe hands. From the outset, it’s evident that the designers have a deep love and passion for the series, treating the property with the utmost care and attention to detail.

Eager builders will first tackle two smaller side builds that accompany 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1: Link’s House, located deep within the Kokiri Forest in Ocarina of Time, and the Master Sword plinth from Breath of the Wild, which features a LEGO version of the sword that seals the darkness. Though modest in size, both builds are packed with references to the series. A small crate at the back of Link’s House contains a few franchise staples, while the Master Sword plinth faithfully recreates the forest floor of the Lost Woods that surrounds the Great Deku Tree. Endura shrooms, Hylian shrooms, a hearty radish, and even a silent princess flower are meticulously crafted in brick form – the silent princess being the stand-out with its accuracy and smart design.

In most sets of this size, the main build usually takes center stage early on, dominating the initial stages of the build. However, 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 keeps things fresh and exciting from the start. Builders begin with Link’s House, then shift to constructing the base of Breath of the Wild’s Great Deku Tree, before pivoting to assemble a brick-built Hestu – a fan-favourite character from the more recent games – before returning to work on the base. This dynamic approach keeps the build engaging and interesting at every stage, offering a refreshing change of pace.

Each of these smaller sub-builds also serves as a fantastic display piece. For those with limited shelf space, they are perfect – compact enough to fit almost anywhere, yet packed with instantly recognisable details from the series.

‘It’s dangerous to go alone. Take this!’

After the Zeldarific (yes, it’s a word) dopamine rush of the first few bags, the pace slows down a bit as the focus shifts to constructing the Great Deku Tree itself. The first five bags come together to form the tree’s foundation, and once completed, you’re given a choice of which version to build. While the manual recommends starting with the Breath of the Wild version, it is the more intricate and involved of the two, so it might be worth tackling the Ocarina of Time model first.

Both models are expertly crafted, and despite their distinct features, they perfectly capture the essence of their respective source material through clever design and excellent part selection. Getting down to eye level with either model will instantly make you feel like you have been transported to Hyrule – put on the Lost Woods theme in the background to complete the experience.

Of the two models, the Breath of the Wild version is probably the more stunning. The pink cherry blossom leaves at the top are visually striking, and the smaller brown trees scattered across the forest floor create an impressive sense of scale. These smaller trees are also cleverly designed, adding to the overall majesty of the build. The interior details are incredibly accurate to the game and fans who have clocked up hours and hours exploring Breath of the Wild’s Hyrule will feel right at home here, especially as they are surrounded by adorable brick-built Koroks – possibly the cutest LEGO companions since Harry Potter’s Niffler.

Would the Koroks have looked better as complete moulds rather than being brick-built? Perhaps, but there’s a unique charm to their design. Their printed faces capture the quirky essence of these little forest creatures perfectly. Overall, choosing to build the Koroks with bricks was a great decision – not only for their delightful appearance but also for helping to keep the already hefty price tag in check.

While the Breath of the Wild model feels vibrant and full of life, the Ocarina of Time model exudes an ancient, timeless quality that perfectly matches its source material. It’s an almost magical experience to see the venerable, ageless Great Deku Tree emerge from the same pile of bricks used for the more modern version.

Several clever play features are smartly integrated into each version of 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1. The Ocarina of Time model includes an opening and closing mouth, along with a Gold Skulltula that drops down with a twist of a gear. Meanwhile, the Breath of the Wild version features a hidden lever at the back that controls the Great Deku Tree’s mouth and eyebrows, bringing the model to life.

A stand-out feature of this set is how distinctly different the two models are. In many 2-in-1 sets, the models share a similar look with only a few noticeable differences. However, in this set, each model is entirely unique, which is a remarkable achievement. It’s just a shame that you can’t build both simultaneously.

‘It’s a secret to everybody…’

The Legend of Zelda games are renowned for their secrets, and true to form, 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 is brimming with Easter eggs waiting to be discovered. From the obvious, like Link’s iconic Hylian Shield and Master Sword (which features a pearlescent blade that shimmers in the light), to the more obscure, such as the Gossip Stone hidden behind the Ocarina of Time’s Great Deku Tree, the set is packed with delightful surprises. Listing them all would spoil the fun, but fans will thoroughly enjoy uncovering each hidden detail for themselves.

Equal care has been given to the minifigures, which feature stunning printing, especially on Link and Zelda’s Champion’s Tunics from Breath of the Wild. Each minifigure’s hair, cap, and ears are crafted as separate moulds, and they all come with double-sided face printing. The accessories are superbly designed, with intricate detailing on the shields, Zelda’s Sheikah Slate, and there’s even a LEGO Ocarina of Time for adult Link.

Incredibly, all these Easter Eggs, accessories and weapons are printed parts. There isn’t a single sticker to apply within the whole set. This adds to the set’s exclusivity and reinforces its status as a premium product, and overall there are just so many positives to heap upon 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1.

Of course it comes with a very hefty price tag, but the cost doesn’t feel too over-inflated when compared to similar products already available and you are effectively getting two very different models. What’s more, the sheer joy this set will no doubt bring to Zelda fans is more than worth the price. This is the LEGO Group delivering on a much-loved IP at its very, very best and it’s truly deserving of the famous Nintendo seal of approval.
