LEGO Star Wars 75389 The Dark Falcon

Just when you thought you’d seen it all from LEGO Star Wars, along comes 75389 The Dark Falcon to remind you that this theme still has a surprise or two up its sleeve. One of three new sets inspired by Disney+ special LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, this menacing model asks: what if the Falcon was actually evil?

It’s a daft question with an even dafter answer, but that’s exactly what seems to be appealing about this set. The novelty colour scheme has gone down well with most (if not all) reviewers, even while there’s a little less novelty in the way 75389 The Dark Falcon comes together. One not to overlook even if you already own a LEGO Millennium Falcon.

“I think the Dark Falcon is going to go down as one of the coolest but still weirdest LEGO Star Wars sets of all time with such a unique twist on a classic in the Millennium Falcon. Truly the only issue I have with this set is that a few of the characters should have had better-looking eyes and C-3PO should have had dual-moulded legs.”

Pros of 75389 The Dark FalconCons of 75389 The Dark Falcon
A fresh and funky take on the FalconThe build will be all too familiar for Falcon veterans
Finetuned just that little bit further from the last versionStill one too many gaps in the design
An array of impressive and unexpected minifigures

Our verdict: A novelty but one not to miss out on

LEGO Star Wars 75398 C-3PO

Meet C-3PO, human-cyborg relations, and one of the best LEGO Star Wars summer 2024 sets. It’s a buildable character done right – no easy feat – and brings this shiny protocol droid to life with 1,138 pieces, most of which are moulded in pearl gold. It’s not quite as blingy as drum-lacquered gold, but it is a lot more practical for a model of this size and which uses this many pieces – and it still sets a new record for the LEGO Star Wars theme.

If there’s a real sticking point with Threepio it’s in his eyes, but they’re nowhere near as jarring as 75371 Chewbacca’s, and everything about this model otherwise instantly captures the pose, posture and form of C-3PO. It’s topped off with the same dual-moulded minifigure we first saw in 75341 Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder.

“This model is in my opinion generally convincing for a product on this scale, it would however have deserved a little more consideration with a real layer of [drum-lacquered gold] which would have given it a little more character. The few shiny touches present on the body of the droid are not enough.”

Hoth Bricks
Pros of 75398 C-3POCons of 75398 C-3PO
Accurate to Threepio’s proportions and postureThe eyes won’t be for everyone
Interesting and engaging building experienceDrum-lacquered gold would have been nicer, if more expensive
Scales really nicely with 75379 R3-D2

Our verdict: An impressive set that will be a day-one purchase for many

LEGO Technic 42177 Mercedes-Benz G 500 PROFESSIONAL Line

Released to mark the 45th anniversary of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in 2024, the 2,891-piece model races onto store shelves this month. 42177 Mercedes-Benz G 500 PROFESSIONAL Line looks to be yet another solid Technic build, one that boasts plenty of authentic driving details and features, including working steering and raised suspension.

It’s hard to look past the hefty price tag of £219.99 / $249.99 / €249.99 but it break the mould from the majority of other recent LEGO Technic sets of this scale, which tend to focus on sporty, speed-focused vehicles. If you’re a diehard car fan, you’re probably going to end up buying this set at some point, but it might be worth waiting for a discount.

“If you like Technic and cars, this will likely provide a lot of enjoyment. If you are in the market [to spend] this amount of money I would personally prefer the Apollo LRV, but this set will give you more pieces, more weight, and more colour.”

LEGO Technic 42172 McLaren P1

Racing on to shelves on August 1 is the latest 1:8-scale LEGO Technic supercar, which shifts into gear and drives back in time for 42172 McLaren P1. Built in flame yellowish orange, this retro supercar makes for a pretty distinctive addition to the Ultimate Concept Car garage, even if it can’t quite match the original vehicle’s delightful curves and headlights one-for-one.

The internal gubbins are all present and correct, matching predecessors including 42083 Bugatti Chiron and 42143 Ferrari Daytona SP3 with steering, moving engine pistons and a gearbox. It’s not the most complicated LEGO Technic set of all time, but one that strives to balance form and function as best it can, with the kind of unparalleled budget that this subtheme unlocks.

“Appearance is a subjective matter. Despite the problems with the proportions on the front, I think many people will still like the end result. In terms of functionality, I didn’t find any problems, and the construction seems to be more stable than the Ferrari.”

LEGO DREAMZzz 71478 The Never Witch’s Midnight Raven

The LEGO Group’s homegrown theme continues to expand in 2024 with more sets and characters spinning out of the LEGO DREAMZzz animated series. One of the new additions arriving August 1 is 71478 The Never Witch’s Midnight Raven, a 1.203-piece build based on the sinister magical creature belonging to the show’s latest villain.

The LEGO DREAMZzz model includes the giant brick-built bird in dark blue, black, pink and trans-pink elements, capitalising on what LEGO DREAMZzz does best: fantastical creatures. You can also transform it into a walking house or cauldron spider, offering plenty of opportunities for play, but it’s also a rarity in theme in that its unique appearance lends it well to display. As the largest build of the upcoming wave, it’s well worth a look, even if you’ve not been plugged into the LEGO DREAMZzz theme so far.

“It’s honestly a pretty decent set. Building birds is an incredibly hard skill, and the [LEGO DREAMZzz] designers do it pretty well.”

LEGO Ideas 21350 Jaws

Long-awaited and highly-anticipated, 21350 Jaws finally swims into view, with Insiders members getting early access to the set on August 3, with a wider launch from August 6. The 1,497-piece movie model features brick-built versions of the Orca and Bruce the Shark, along with minifigures of Chief Brody, Hooper and Quint, plus a unique display base.

Fans have been chomping at the bit to sink their teeth into 21350 Jaws and the good news is that the wait was worth it. It stays pretty close to the original fan design and is a dynamic display model for any fans of the iconic film. Even if you’re not, the detail on the boat and the shark are impressive for the price, although it’s certainly more suited for appearances than interactive features.

21350 Jaws does not disappoint! Both the Orca and the shark are expertly designed and Quint’s fishing vessel particularly stands out, with superb detail.”

Pros of 21350 JawsCons of 21350 Jaws
Near-perfect recreation of an iconic movie sceneLittle opportunity for play

Our verdict: Authentic and well-priced, a day-one purchase for many

LEGO Star Wars 75385 Ahsoka Tano’s Duel on Peridea

75385 Ahsoka Tano’s Duel on Peridea has been controversially received by the LEGO Star Wars community, with many comparing it to the ill-fated 75334 Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Vader. The main build itself is nothing to write home about and would probably be better received if the designs were printed, rather than a slog of applying stickers just right to achieve clean lines.

Ultimately, the deciding factor on 75385 Ahsoka Tano’s Duel on Peridea is going to be the minifigures. We get an updated Thrawn with dual-moulded boots, Morgan Elsbeth complete with a recoloured Darksaber, a Night Trooper, and some incredibly detailed minifigures of Ezra and Ahsoka. There’s no question that each one of those is well worth adding to your collection – but even still, it’s hard to justify the price. Perhaps this is one to wait for a discount on.

“At a first glance, you might be able to trick yourself into thinking this is worth the $55 price tag. That’s what I thought at least, especially when you consider that all five of these minifigures are new and exclusive to this set. But once I finished building this set, I was left thinking, ‘that’s it?'”

LEGO Animal Crossing 77052 K.K.’s Concert at the Plaza

77052 K.K.’s Concert at the Plaza is the biggest and most expensive LEGO Animal Crossing set so far, but it’s also home to one of the franchise’s most iconic characters. That said, the three minifigures in the set include one duplicate, which could be bad news for LEGO Animal Crossing collectors.

The build depicts one of the most notable locations from the series – the town hall – a Pocket Camp reference and some festival-adjacent builds on the side to display in the plaza. As is to be expected from LEGO Animal Crossing, the town hall’s model is simplistic with some gaps in the back and sides but that’s in line with the rest of the theme. Its price compared to its piece count may tempt you into waiting for a discount, but first impressions have been positive.

“I’m blown away by this set, it definitely could use a fourth minifigure but still with all the prints and different things you get, you definitely see and get your money’s worth.”

LEGO Minecraft 21265 The Crafting Table

If you’re familiar with LEGO Minecraft as a whole, you probably instantly think of playsets designed around the blocky characters – but here’s something new. The blocks remain but have been reconfigured into a display-focused set, made up of a pixellated Crafting Table on the outside which opens up to reveal microbuilds of the different biomes from Minecraft within.

Where LEGO Minecraft has been a largely child-focused theme in recent months, this 18+ set is squarely for older builders and the first of its kind for the theme. Priced at £79.99 / $89.99 / €89.99 for over 1,000 pieces, that might seem a little high, despite it being a good-looking display model. Nonetheless, for any Minecraft fan, even if you’re new to LEGO, 21265 The Crafting Table is a compelling choice.

“This set is a bit of a return to form for LEGO Minecraft, or at least going back to its roots where Minecraft actually began as a series of micro-world-style dioramas – but this one has a twist. I’m glad they’re doing something unique and different when it comes to LEGO Minecraft.”

LEGO Star Wars 75393 TIE Fighter & X-Wing Mash-up

Of the three LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy sets, 75393 TIE Fighter & X-Wing Mash-up is the underdog when stacked up next to the likes of Jedi
Bob and a dark side Millennium Falcon. That’s thanks in no small part to its minifigures consisting mostly of new, non-canonical characters.

First impressions of these minifigures deem them as generic and unrecognisable, since they’re based on the tie-in special that has yet to start streaming at the time of writing. The build itself has been seen as a success and the new TIE Fighter and X-wing are being praised for their accurate scale and details, as well as the unique combination feature. While a discount could be worth waiting for thanks to the minifigures, the main model itself is at least reviewed favourably.

“I have the reverse issue with this set compared to 75389 The Dark Falcon – I don’t like the Dark Falcon set, but I do like minifigure line-up. In 75393 TIE Fighter & X-Wing Mash-up, I actually do like the set, but I definitely dislike the minifigures.”

Solid Brix Studios
Pros of 75393 TIE Fighter & X-Wing Mash-upCons of 75393 TIE Fighter & X-Wing Mash-up
A couple of exclusive minifigures……but you probably won’t know or

Scale-accurate TIE Fighter and X-wing with a good level of detail

Our verdict: Affordable way to get two essential LEGO Star Wars ships if you haven’t already

LEGO Marvel 76295 The Avengers Helicarrier

LEGO Marvel has joined the Starship collection (sort of) with 76295 The Avengers Helicarrier but the Marvel Cinematic Universe model isn’t all it’s priced up to be. At £69.99 / $79.99 / €79.99 for just over 500 pieces, the Helicarrier recreation hasn’t received favourable reviews, with most noting the high number of stickers for the price and how challenging they are to place.

Aside from the sticker situation, the build isn’t said to be particularly bad with some interesting techniques used to best capture the shape of the engines and the runways, but you’ll want to wait for a good discount on this LEGO Marvel set before it’s worthwhile.

“I really did enjoy the build experience, I think it came together very well, but I do need to talk about the stickers. I did have a very hard time lining up the runway lines and that is so imperative to have them line up and I just felt so frustrated not being able to line them up all the time.”

LEGO Icons 10368 Chrysanthemum / 10369 Plum Blossom

We might be cheating slightly here by including two sets in one, but we think you’ll forgive us because it’s hard to ignore just how well these sets pair together. Thankfully, unlike some other pairings in the LEGO system, buying both one won’t even break the bank, with each priced at £24.99 / $29.99 / €29.99, coming to less than £50 / $60 / €60 if you want to display both.

You probably will want to display both, seeing as the builds are relatively small and the colour schemes compliment one another so well. These are some ideal entry-level LEGO Botanical Collection sets for newcomers, but also well worth a look for long-time collectors. The unique shape of the flowers uses some creative building techniques (if slightly repetitive with the amount of bananas used in 10368 Chrysanthemum for example) that strike an impressive silhouette when fully built.

“I love the size of them, I love that they’re not too large and they’re not small…Both of these flowers complement each other so well.”
