LEGO BrickLink Pirates set is designed by a fan, and you can tell

Crowdfunding for the LEGO BrickLink Designer Program Series 2 starts soon and you can tell that its LEGO Pirates set is designed by a fan.

910038 Ominous Isle is just days away from being crowdfunding with up to 30,000 copies of the model being produced via the second series of the LEGO BrickLink Designer Program.

For those unaware, the LEGO BrickLink Designer Program invites online enthusiasts to pitch builds to the community that may be picked for a future set. The twist compared to LEGO Ideas is that the models are not overlooked entirely by official LEGO designers but are streamlined to an extent to ensure that they can be produced.

The LEGO Pirates model in the second series is a shining example of the good that can come from LEGO fans designing sets.

As noted in our video highlighting the model, which you can watch by clicking above, while the model can be frustrating at times to put together, the level of detail is unprecedented for LEGO Pirates. The mix of minifigure-made and natural aspects makes for a visually appealing LEGO set with a more-than-adequate amount of gold pieces that any pirate would be proud to call their treasure.

Those wanting to play with 910038 Ominous Isle may want to be careful, but there’s little doubt that the LEGO BrickLink Designer Program sets are designed for older enthusiasts anyway and they’re quite literally made for fans, by fans.

Still, there’s no ignoring that the build is somewhat fragile and you can tell that it’s not been designed by an official LEGO designer. It might even give you more of an appreciation for models such as 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay and 10320 Eldorado Fortress.

Crowdfunding for 910038 Ominous Isle and the rest of the LEGO BrickLink Designer Program Series 2 sets starts on June 6 at 8:00am Pacific Time and you can take a closer look at the new LEGO Pirates set by reading our written review, complete with a gallery of images. LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
