LEGO CEO leaves door open for more brick-based movies

Hot on the heels of Barbie, the LEGO Group’s CEO has far from closed the door on any further LEGO movies.

Barbie has soared past every major movie record that counts, quickly taking the top spot for the biggest opening weekend of 2023, the highest opening for a non-sequel movie, and the biggest opening for a toy-focused film. It’s little wonder that every toy brand is now looking around for a way to tap into the magic, with a Bratz versus Barbie TV series on the way as one example.

In the world of LEGO, we’ve already had several successful brick-based films, with The LEGO Movie, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, The LEGO Batman Movie, and The LEGO Batman Movie 2. Each one was a box office success (although not quite at the heights of Barbie), so will we see the winning formula win again? According to the LEGO Group Niels B. Christiansen, the door is certainly open.

“I must admit that I also want us to tell our stories in the film format again at some point,” Niels B. Christiansen said in a phone interview with Bloomberg. “And we’re also looking at that.”

Indeed, we heard reports via Variety in July that a new ‘hybrid’ live-action and animation LEGO film could be in the works, helmed by The Lost City directors Aaron and Adam Nee. This is a potential product of Universal Pictures and the LEGO Group’s five-year partnership, which began in 2020 – leaving just two years left for them to seal the deal.

With Christiansen backing the idea and a market that’s clearly clamouring for nostalgia-inducing toy-focused films, perhaps there’s never been a better time for another LEGO movie to be announced – or at least we can hope so.
