LEGO CEO adds voice to environmental pledge to the UN

The LEGO Group’s CEO, Niels B. Christiansen, has joined 26 other Danish businesses calling for companies and policymakers to stand together for a net-zero future.

As leaders of the world convene at the UN General Assembly in New York on September 19, the LEGO Group’s CEO Niels B. Christiansen has joined CEOs from 26 Danish businesses. The group of business leaders pledged to support UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ call for strong commitments and clear, transparent plans to “rescue the SDGs”. The 17 SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) were created by the UN to act as a “shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future”.

In the CEO statement, 27 business leaders pledged their company’s ongoing dedication the SDGs and principles of the Paris Agreement, as well as calling upon Danish regulators and policymakers to support their efforts, level the playing field, and incentivise sustainable choices in continued public-private solid partnerships.

The LEGO Group’s contribution to this pledge comes. after the company pledged to work with the Science Based Targets initiative in August, 2023. This included a promise to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, a goal that’s echoed in the UN commitment. In order to achieve this, a Carbon KPI, which will be tied to executive remuneration from 2024, will track progress towards carbon omissions and science-based targets.

To meet this ambition, the LEGO Group has recently announced its plans to triple investment in environmental sustainability over the next three years, particularly in areas that will help reduce GHG emissions, spending more than $1.4 billion on sustainability-related activities. One recent example included tree-planting initiatives at a brand-new factory in Vietnam, as well as:

  • Designing buildings and sites to be carbon-neutral
  • Increasing capacity and production of renewable energy at various sites, including factories, offices, and stores
  • Taking CO2 emissions into account across all business decisions, including implementing a Carbon KPI which will be tied to the company’s executive remuneration from 2024
  • Joining forces with suppliers to collectively reduce environmental impact

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
