LEGO has a chance to reinvent the wheel with a 2025 Star Wars set

The LEGO Star Wars team has the chance to reinvent the wheel with a rumoured 2025 set – but it would mean breaking the mould for a collection 20 years in the making.

LEGO Star Wars and Jedi Starfighters are intrinsically intertwined by this point, to the point that they clearly carry the same weight as the Millennium Falcon, X-wing and TIE Fighter within Billund (given all four of these ships have just been reinvented and reinterpreted for Rebuild the Galaxy). It’s probably no surprise then that a new Jedi Interceptor is rumoured for early 2025.

75401 Ahsoka’s Jedi Interceptor is currently said to be dropping in January next year, with 290 pieces in the box for £39.99 / $44.99. By our count, this would be the 10th Eta-2 Actis-class Interceptor at minifigure scale since 2005’s 7256 Jedi Starfighter and Vulture Droid and 7283 Ultimate Space Battle introduced Anakin and Obi-Wan’s yellow and red ships respectively. The latest was last year’s 75360 Yoda’s Jedi Starfighter, the second of its kind.

Yoda’s two smaller starfighters aside, pretty much every Jedi Interceptor from 2005 to 2020 has maintained relatively similar dimensions (even while specific techniques have changed). That’s all thanks to the 10x6x3 bubble windscreen that has remained a constant in these sets for nearly 20 years, establishing the scale for the starfighters and forcing the LEGO Star Wars designers to work everything else around them to suit.

As is often the case with LEGO playsets though, it means pushing the scale out to something that’s not quite appropriate for the source material. These one-man fighters are supposed to be small, compact ships, and while the LEGO versions generally reflect that notion, their cockpits feel a touch oversized and out of proportion relative to the rest of the craft.

2025 therefore represents an opportunity to reinvent the wheel by introducing a new windscreen element for the Jedi Interceptor. Whether that would be a good thing is another question entirely.

Veteran LEGO Star Wars collectors may be sitting on several generations of Jedi Interceptors at this point, with at least the two most recent full-size ships – 75281 Anakin’s Jedi Interceptor and 75135 Obi-Wan’s Jedi Interceptor – following modern design techniques that will likely be replicated in 75401 Ahsoka’s Jedi Interceptor to one degree or another. If the LEGO Group prizes consistency even between retired and existing sets, chances are we’ll be sticking with that oversized canopy for a while longer yet.

The piece required is still in production too, most recently appearing in 2024’s 42178 Surface Space Loader LT78 and 42181 VTOL Heavy Cargo Spaceship LT81, so the LEGO Group is clearly content with the design language of the bulbous windscreen. Printing a new version of that piece for 75401 Ahsoka’s Jedi Interceptor is probably going to be the order of the day, contributing to the high price per piece of the rumoured LEGO Star Wars 2025 set.

But consider this: if the LEGO Group shrinks the cockpit of its Jedi Interceptors, and perhaps the rest of the ship to follow suit, it could leave space in 75401 Ahsoka’s Jedi Interceptor’s part count to sneak in something extra. 75135 Obi-Wan’s Jedi Interceptor achieved a plenty substantial starfighter with only 215 pieces, so knock a few off that count and you’ve got yourself a little room to play with for – say – a couple of Buzz Droids, or maybe even a small Vulture Droid.

Wishful thinking on our part? Maybe, probably, yes, but the LEGO Star Wars team has paired Ahsoka’s starfighter with a Vulture Droid before (in a 291-piece set, no less), so a nod to that 2009 model would be fun. And it would greatly increase the value proposition of what’s currently shaping up to be an incredibly expensive start to 2025. We’re just trying to be optimistic here…

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
