LEGO DC will seemingly be back on hiatus in 2024

A price comparison site has published lists of LEGO sets launching in 2024 for nearly every current theme – but there’s one very obvious exception in LEGO DC.

The LEGO DC theme appeared to be finding its feet again this summer, with the launch of a full wave of sets for the first time since October 2021 (or January 2022 outside the US) and the biggest Batman set to date in 76252 Batcave – Shadow Box. But that renaissance will seemingly be short-lived, as there are no new DC sets among the latest lists of LEGO products on the way in 2024.

New-for-2024 sets across themes including Star Wars, Harry Potter, Speed Champions, City, Icons, Art and more have all appeared on brickmerge.de this week, while reliable sources including 1414falconfan have reported a total of 12 different LEGO Marvel models on the way next year. Those are the ones to focus on, because the Marvel and DC themes share product numbers.

If there were any LEGO DC sets planned for early 2024, it’s reasonable to expect that word of them would have surfaced at the same time as reports of Marvel’s line-up – and their absence speaks volumes. While you couldn’t really call this month’s trio of LEGO DC sets a full relaunch, given every single one revolves around Batman and the Joker (it’s almost a parody of itself at this point), most of us were still hoping that they would pave the way for DC to return to shelves proper in 2024.

That might still happen later next year, of course, but it wouldn’t be prompted by anything happening on the silver screen: just one DC-related property is expected to hit cinemas in 2024, Joker: Folie à Deux, which follows 2019’s alternate-universe movie Joker. The chances of seeing sets for that one are less than zero, but that just means the slate was wide open to dive back into DC comics, like the good old days.

For at least the first quarter of 2024, all signs are that the LEGO Super Heroes team won’t be seizing that opportunity – at least based on these lists, which may or may not be comprehensive.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
