LEGO Marvel designer reveals story behind new Guardians of the Galaxy set

A LEGO Marvel designer has revealed the story of 76286 Guardians of the Galaxy: The Milano‘s design process and how it’s a dream come true.

76286 Guardians of the Galaxy: The Milano is one of several LEGO Marvel sets launching in just a few days as the biggest and most detailed depiction of the titular Marvel Cinematic Universe ship to date. It’s been a busy weekend for Marvel and the franchise’s enthusiasts at San Diego Comic-Con but for one freelance LEGO designer, August 1 is going to be a much bigger day.

Full-time designer Chris Perron has shared on Instagram some of the anecdotes and details from the design of the 2,090-piece set, including that the set started as a sketch from an intern who worked on 76193 The Guardians’ Ship in 2020.

“I had the opportunity to work with Edd Lawrence on this, much like 76193 The Guardians’ Ship back in 2020,” writes Perron in the post. “Edd was an intern back then, and during his time he had made a beautiful sketch model of this spaceship with the dream of it someday being turned into an official set.

“Fast forward a few years later, and we were able to hire Edd back as a freelancer to come and work on this project with me! A lot of the heavy lifting and genius of this model’s shaping goes to his credit. gamlebilrokker also had a huge hand in helping us when time was tight in building through the model and cleaning up the building experience!”

We can’t imagine that it’s often for interns to work on one iteration of a LEGO Marvel ship, leave with a sketch of the original spacecraft then come back to the LEGO Group to turn that sketch into reality. Their hard work seems to have been worth it though according to early reviews.

Perron also goes on to reveal why the build has a new windscreen element and what it was like to create the unique piece.

“We needed a new canopy element for this model – that was a tricky task since the model had a lot of very unconventional shaping, but I wanted to make sure it was going to be a nice element that fits the LEGO geometry nicely and not be super specific,” explains Perron.

76286 Guardians of the Galaxy: The Milano launches on August 1, 2024, for £159.99 / $179.99 / €179.99 alongside a full wave of LEGO Marvel models.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
