LEGO Formula 1 sets could benefit from upcoming smart brick

An upcoming interactive smart brick could well be just what LEGO Formula 1 sets need to truly bring the racing models to life.

The LEGO Group yesterday announced that it would be entering into a multi-year deal with Formula 1, with the fruits of that new partnership arriving sometime in 2025. While LEGO DUPLO sets have already been confirmed to be on the way next year, there are currently no clear indicators regarding what other models racing fans can expect to see.

However, initial details regarding the LEGO Formula 1 builds state that a ‘diverse product portfolio for fans and builders of all ages’ is being lined up. In addition, a dedicated landing page for the partnership includes a clock counting down to November 20, with silhouettes of what may be Formula 1 minifigures standing above.

While it wouldn’t surprise us to see next year’s LEGO Formula 1 branding appear across the likes of City, Technic, Icons and Speed Champions sets, one additional upcoming element could be included with key models to really bring them roaring to life.

Back in June 2024, the LEGO Group briefly added details for a new interactive smart brick to the official online site. The piece was revealed alongside a number of currently unreleased jungle-themed City builds, before being removed from the platform altogether.

Since then there’s been no word on when or where the smart brick and sets might be arriving, but there’s clearly potential for the former to be used in LEGO Formula 1 models.

For starters, the brick is said to respond directly to everything that’s done with it, such as the way it’s moved and how you build and rebuild sets with it. The element also appears to work in tandem with special tile tags in each set that have a specific image on them.

That could mean LEGO Formula 1 sets that come with the smart brick might be able to light up, make sounds or even feature movement functionality. The latter should be an especially exciting thought for racing fans, as the ability to have LEGO cars that can actually move opens up a whole new world of possibilities.

In addition to the smart brick and tile tags, the technology will also be supported by a wireless charging pad for the new interactive element, although the previous listing stated that the accessory would initially only be included in the upcoming 60691 Jungle Explorer Base Camp.

For now though, the idea of combining the new smart brick with any potential LEGO Formula 1 sets is pure speculation. The fact that the possibility exists though could really make any future models that use the element true racing champions.
