No two ways about it: LEGO Fortnite’s IG-11 minifigure is cursed

LEGO Fortnite has added a couple of new Star Wars: The Mandalorian character skins to its roster, including IG-11… but not as you know him.

Like every other LEGO IG droid before him, IG-11’s regular LEGO minifigure takes advantage of the standard battle droid torso, arms and legs, and in this case pairs them with a claw piece, 1×1 cone and printed 1×1 round brick for his head. It’s a classic LEGO take on the character imbued with all that LEGO DNA you know and love, and feels just right for his minifigure. And then there’s his skin in Fortnite.

The multiplayer game has just added two new Star Wars: The Mandalorian skins to its locker with Moff Gideon and IG-11, and both have respective LEGO versions to use in the LEGO Fortnite game modes. Moff Gideon looks pretty much as you’d expect, reflective of his minifigure in this summer’s 75386 Paz Vizsla and Moff Gideon Battle. IG-11 doesn’t.

Presumably for his skin to better sync up with other characters (and existing animations), IG-11’s LEGO Fortnite appearance swaps out the battle droid parts for a traditional minifigure body. The all-over printing is neat and his custom moulded head piece would actually work pretty well in real life (at least when paired with battle droid elements), but there’s just something unnerving about seeing his spindly droid parts as a regular minifigure.

Reactions on the web so far have ranged from ‘headpiece is cool but body makes it super cursed’ to: “What fresh horror hath mine eyes beheld?” A more measured response over on reddit from UX_Strategist reads: “That’s a bit of a bummer. It doesn’t look bad, it just doesn’t look like the genuine LEGO figure I was expecting to see.”

A post on the LEGO Fortnite subreddit also points out that IG-11 has now set a precedent for future LEGO Star Wars skins based on droid (or droid-like) characters, including General Grievous. Just imagine the Separatist leader with a regular minifigure torso and legs. Regretting that mental image? So were we. You’re welcome.

Still, if you want an in-universe explanation for IG-11’s dramatic change in body type, just look to Rich_Invite7921: “The reason that he’s bulkier is because he just drank lots of blue milk, ate protein, and exercised daily.” Makes sense to us. Just don’t expect to see this version of IG-11 ever turn up in an actual LEGO Star Wars set.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
