LEGO Harry Potter 76437 The Burrow Collectors’ Edition review

LEGO Harry Potter 76437 The Burrow Collectors’ Edition revisits a familiar location from the Wizarding World with more style and depth than ever before.

LEGO Harry Potter 76437 The Burrow Collectors’ Edition may look like something you’ve built before and you’d be forgiven for thinking back to 2020’s 75980 Attack on the Burrow (which was on shelves until as recently as 2022), furrowing your brow and asking more specifically ‘haven’t we just built this?’

Well, when it comes to revisiting things for sets in close succession, LEGO Harry Potter is the theme that very much leads the way at the moment, even ahead of usual suspects of recent years like LEGO Star Wars and NINJAGO.

And, 18 months between 75980 Attack on the Burrow leaving shelves and 76437 The Burrow Collectors’ Edition being released is probably as close as any theme has pushed things of late (multiple R2-D2s to one side). So, with such a tight turnaround on upgrading something many LEGO Harry Potter fans will still have fresh in their memories and barely collecting dust on their shelves, 76437 The Burrow Collectors’ Edition faces an added layer of scrutiny that perhaps no Collectors’ Edition set before it has had to.

Does it stand up to such critical expectations? Going bigger certainly helps…

Burrow’s got back

Indeed, 2020-2022’s 75980 Attack on the Burrow came in at 1,047 pieces and was priced at £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99. With more than double the pieces at 2,405, and more than double the budget at £219.99 / $259.99 / €259.99, 76437 The Burrow Collectors’ Edition has a lot more to play with and very much leans into the creative opportunities that affords.

And that is quite literally so when it comes to the iconic slant that the front top half of the building has, seemingly captured here even more pronounced and specific than before. It’s not designed anywhere near the same as you may have built before and, beyond the novelty value that this offers, it also delivers a final effect that feels truer and more accurate to what we saw in the films. It looks as amusing and unsteady as it does on screen and is achieved through some quite creative and enjoyable LEGO building.

Whilst the additional budget also lends itself to a deeper dive into the details and mixture of colours and textures of the wonky house both inside and out, the other most obvious gain to be felt in 2024’s 76437 The Burrow Collectors’ Edition is in the simple fact that where the last version of the Weasleys’ family home was left open in the back side, this new version is complete with a full 360 exterior that when shut gives us our first ever fully complete LEGO set of The Burrow and when open reveals more rooms of the house than we’ve ever built before. It all makes for a model that looks great from any angle on display when closed up, and as busy, chaotic and sprawling as you’d hope for when opened up for play.

The much larger piece count has also contributed to a final model measuring roughly 30% taller than the previous version. It may not seem like the biggest gain, but it is a smart choice in scale that isn’t overwhelming for anyone actually wanting to display it in a normal room (LEGO Star Wars, we’re looking at you with your supermassive Millennium Falcon requiring a bespoke coffee table and understanding family, neither of which come in the box with the set), whilst still offering something that feels a whole lot more authentic to the source material and to the scale and number of included minifigures.

In short, 76437 The Burrow Collectors’ Edition is just the right height with a piece count that offers up a far more luxurious, complete and authentic LEGO set.

Magical details

As mentioned, the increased piece count and budget for 76437 The Burrow Collectors’ Edition also lends itself to a far more detailed and thorough exploration of the inside of the Weasley residence and a number of rooms throughout.

Primarily this is realised in a large downstairs that captures the cluttered nature of the Weasleys’ living room and kitchen quite perfectly – in every direction there’s either a piece of furniture, interesting and film-accurate decoration, or an enchanted object knitting or cleaning. The room feels perfectly lived in before even considering the main play feature to the set that is located in the centre of the downstairs space – the fireplace complete with Floo Network function.

Based on Harry Potter’s first experience of using the magical mode of transportation at the start of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the way a quite extensive play feature has been built into The Burrow is very smart, both for how it cleverly captures the design of the fireplace as it lights up with green flames, and for how it translates into LEGO function the act of transporting through the network.

Twist a dial that is positioned above the fireplace and any minifigure placed on the green stand will slowly rise up the spiral green shoot and seemingly disappear. It’s a simple play feature but one that sits just as relevant as any other detail built into the set, for both the charm and story-telling that it contributes to76437 The Burrow Collectors’ Edition, enjoyable too whether you are a younger or older builder.

All in the family

Included with the set are an impressive 10 minifigures. Alongside the obligatory Harry Potter come all nine members of the Weasley family including – something notable for LEGO Harry Potter as a theme – Charlie Weasley, who only ever appeared in the films via a brief cameo in a photograph in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and never as a character on screen. The inclusion of this book-based character is a small but significant nod to the books and is a great inclusion for fans after something even more authentic to the Wizarding World than just what came in the films. It represents clever character choice from the LEGO Harry Potter design team and is a deep and relevant cut we don’t quite see the equivalent of in LEGO Marvel, LEGO Batman or LEGO Star Wars.

Character design across all 10 minifigures is as expected even if Molly Weasley could have benefitted from the slightly shorter mid-length legs as she currently stands a bit too tall otherwise. Accessories for the characters are kept to a minimum as they each have space and purpose within the multi-room dollhouse of the set itself.

Not every LEGO Harry Potter set delivers the most complete or relevant list of characters, but where you would expect a Collectors’ Edition set to do just that, 76437 The Burrow Collectors’ Edition very much delivers, adding the final layer of quality and immersion to an already impressive set.
