LEGO Icons Lamborghini Countach: To mod or not to mod

With a full gallery of images for 10337 Lamborghini Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole, we compared it to a fan-favourite Rebrickable version of the same car.

When we first heard rumours of LEGO Icons 10337 Lamborghini Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole back in April, we knew that there would be competition for the official set in the form of Firas Abu-Jaber’s Lamborghini Countach on Rebrickable. Now that the official LEGO Icons set has been revealed in full, we can compare the two options.

The custom mod is designed and built entirely from elements included in 10295 Porsche 911, meaning you don’t have to buy any extra parts to turn our LEGO Porsche into a Lamborghini. While 10337 Lamborghini Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole is £10 / $10 / €10 more expensive than 10295 Porsche 911, when you add on the $15 instructions from Rebrickable, the price comes out pretty much the same. The question remains: which is better?

Double rear tires

One of the first key differences to note between the modded 10295 Porsche 911 and 10337 Lamborghini Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole is that the LEGO Icons designers appear to have used double rear tires to ensure that they’re wider than the front, just like the real car.

Early Lamborghini Countachs were fitted with 205/70 VR 14 Michelin XWX on the front and 215/70 VR 14 Michelin XWX on the rear. That’s a 10mm difference between the front and rear tyres, a feature reflected in the different tyre widths in 10337 Lamborghini Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole, but not the Rebrickable mod, as it only uses pieces from 10295 Porsche 911.

Uniform spoiler colour

The official LEGO set’s spoiler is in the same white colour as the rest of the main body of the car, whereas Firas Abu-Jaber’s uses black. Both work well, although the all-white look is closer to the signgature look of the iconic classic car.

The photos above also highlight that access to the interior workings of the car is different between the two models, with a flap coming behind the spoiler on the modded version and in front of the spoiler on the LEGO Icons set. There’s also a more detailed V12 in the former, wiht the latter still providing a parred down brick-built engine.

More branded logos

Thanks to the LEGO Group’s greater clout with licensing and production possibilities for stickers, thers is of course more opportunity for branded logos in the form of stickers on the bumper and hood. Of course, 10295 Porsche 911 doesn’t include any Lamborghini or Countach logos, so modders will need to do with it.

Interior details differ

It’s always tricky to include large amounts of detail in a brick-built car’s interior but both versions do it impressively well. Both have the basics of a steering wheel and a gearstick, but both also go a little further with tiles and plates to recreate different parts of the console. They are undoubtedly different from one another but not significantly worse or better than the other, aside from personal preference.

Smoother silhouette

The benefit of having a full LEGO system of pieces to choose from to design a car, rather than working with the elements of an existing set, is being able to sculpt out a precise shape. That’s clear in 10337 Lamborghini Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole with how smooth the main body connects to the windscreen, the iconic sharp edge of the front bumper, and overall smoother silhouette of the official model.

However, it’s undeniable that Firas Abu-Jaber did a stunning job with their Rebrickable mod. If you already own 10295 Porsche 911, it’s certainly an effective way to have a brick-built Countach to display without shelling out a further £159.99 / $179.99 / €179.99. However, if you’re weighing up which one to buy in the first place, there are some minor details that give the official 10337 Lamborghini Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole an edge.

LEGO Icons 10337 Lamborghini Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole will be available to buy from July 1 for LEGO Insiders and July 4 for everyone else, retailing for £159.99 / $179.99 / €179.99.
