One LEGO Icons Space set has gone down a treat with real NASA scientists

Space-themed LEGO sets are designed to bring a little bit of outer space into your home but even actual NASA scientists are also getting in on the fun.

NASA’s Head of Science Dr Nicola Fox took to social media to share a snap of her completed build of LEGO Icons 10341 NASA Artemis Space Launch System, the work of a “fun weekend build.”

“There were a few tense moments when a couple of pieces were aligned incorrectly but we got through it,” she added. “Not sure how I’m ever going to move it to my office.”

If she does manage to get the set into work, it might not be the only copy of the LEGO Icons set there. Speaking to Scientific American, Dr Fox explained how a lot of people working at NASA have experimented with building LEGO as well.

“It was fun to build because there were a lot of people from NASA building it that weekend, and so we were all chatting with one another,” she said. “Like I asked one of them, ‘Why is there a pink LEGO brick in the base? Is this some secret thing about Artemis that I don’t know?’ And she was like, ‘No, it’s just there so that you know which way to orient the set.'”

Building LEGO is something Dr Fox has always done, describing it as “stress relief.” It’s also not the only space-themed models she has decorating her office, not all of which are made from LEGO bricks. So much so, the NASA scientist’s copy of 10341 NASA Artemis Space Launch System is still sat on her dining room table, waiting for her to find a suitable slot in her office space.

If you want to join the excellent company of various NASA scientists and build your own copy of 10341 NASA Artemis Space Launch System, it’s available to buy now for £219.99 / $259.99 / €259.99.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
