LEGO Ideas 21350 Jaws includes a number of surprising pieces

The LEGO Ideas team has revealed that a number of surprising pieces were utilised in the development and construction of 21350 Jaws.

The LEGO Group recently revealed 21350 Jaws, a 1,497-piece set based on a successful LEGO Ideas submission by Jonny Campbell and Steven Spielberg’s iconic 1975 film. Priced at £129.99 / $149.99 / €149.99, the upcoming 18+ model will be available exclusively for Insiders to purchase from August 3, while everyone else gets a shot at the build from August 6.

In addition to brick-built versions of Bruce the shark and the Orca, plus minifigures of Chief Brody, Hooper and Quint, the LEGO Ideas model also utilised a surprising number of pieces from other themes during its development and construction.

In a recent roundtable interview with the LEGO Ideas design team, we discovered that elements from DREAMZzz, NINJAGO, Speed Champions and even Toy Story 4 were used when creating 21350 Jaws.

Design manager Jordan David Scott has already discussed how the team was able to take advantage of a recoloured DREAMZzz piece for Hooper’s hat, but that wasn’t the only reused part in the set.

“I think there were a couple of elements that just happened to be around at the same time,” said Jordan, “like the new flag element from Friends. So perfect timing and then the hat for Hooper from DREAMZzz – two new elements that came at the right time for us to use them.”

Also aiding the LEGO Ideas team create the look of Bruce the shark was a racing theme that offered up just the right pieces. “With the shark, I think Speed champions was hugely beneficial,” explained senior designer Ollie Gregory. “I think it was a Mercedes [model] or something that really helped define the shape of it, so I’m indebted to them!”

While no specific new pieces were created for 21350 Jaws, the LEGO Ideas team did look to elements from even more diverse themes to complete the build. “We did explore other scales of shark,” said Ollie, “and this is the kind of shark we had from City a few years go (see image above) that’s just chopped up.

“At one point I was contesting maybe this could be an element or we could use this front piece and integrate it into the base. While that is more in scale with the realistic size of Jaws, it almost looks comedic. It doesn’t give you the gravitas of a brick-built shark. It was quite nice to cash in on some [existing pieces],” added Ollie.

In addition to a top hat for the Orca’s deck light, the LEGO Ideas team turned to 2019’s Toy Story 4 theme for the ship’s ladder elements, repurposing a minifigure’s accessory to achieve the look they were after.

“Bo Peep’s crook was one of those first defining elements,” said Ollie, ” just because of that iconic loop you get on a lot of nautical ladders. It was really a case of how do we integrate that into the model, as LEGO doesn’t really have anything that has that half circular shape.”

21350 Jaws will be available for Insiders members to purchase from August 3, with a wider launch taking place from August 6. The LEGO Ideas set is priced at £129.99 in the UK, $149.99 in the US and €149.99 in Europe.
