LEGO Ideas fan designer says boats are ‘underrated’ as new project sails to 10K

The designer behind the latest LEGO Ideas project to sail to 10,000 votes says boats are ‘underrated’ within the LEGO Group.

Arjan Oude Kotte (or Konajra on LEGO Ideas) has reached the review stage at the third time of asking with Bob’s Old Tugboat, a 2,900-piece vessel originally submitted back in February 2023. Eighteen months later, this harbour tugboat – Arjan’s third boat project on LEGO Ideas – has just racked up its 10,000th vote, and will now progress to the second 2024 review.

It’s a boat with a backstory too, as Arjan has envisioned an entire narrative behind what he’s dubbed Tugger 3, in reference to his inaugural LEGO Ideas project, Tugger 1. The proposed model includes minifigures of Bob, his wife Jill and their cat Misty, who have together revamped and refitted their tugboat for their retirement – complete with a kitchen and living area inside.

“I have been building LEGO ships for over 10 years now and would really like to see a larger ship as a LEGO Ideas set,” Arjan wrote on his project page. “Somehow it seems boats are underrated at LEGO. I think this model is cute, using a lot of the more beautiful LEGO colours and will appeal to many LEGO fans and will look good displayed on a desk or shelf.”

Arjan does note that the model uses several elements that don’t currently exist in the colours he’s chosen, so if the LEGO Group does greenlight the tugboat for production, the colour scheme would likely have to change. That’s possibly putting the cart before the horse, though (or the engine before the boat?) – first it needs to make it past the review stage…

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
