LEGO Ideas The Insect Collection sizes down but glows up
Small but mighty, we’re pretty impressed with the newly-revealed LEGO Ideas 21342 The Insect Collection. Here’s why.
From the transparent orange elements on the Hercules Beetle’s wing to the versatility and possibilities to reimagine elements of the buildable bugs, LEGO Ideas 21342 The Insect Collection is positively glowing with vibrant colours and exquisite details. While some might see the focus on just three larger-scale insects as a decrease from the originally suggested five, we’d argue that this change enabled the designers to really give those chosen creepy-crawlies a glow up.
“The initial idea for a selection of brick-built bugs has been expanded upon, turning them into little diorama scenes featuring not just the insects, but also a selection of bits of flora” comments our YouTube editor Matthew. “The little bit of foliage on display is going to be fantastic for pairing these with, for example, sets from the Botanical Collection.”
Aside from the aesthetics, 21342 The Insect Collection also gives us some clues about where the landscape of LEGO is taking us over the next few months and years. Indeed, is this narrow-focused but aesthetically impressive set a sign that more of these smaller, more reasonably priced models are on the way?
After all, there are only so many enormous and higher-priced LEGO sets that any one person can buy in a year, if at all. Matthew has dug into what makes 21342 The Insect Collection such a delight, as well as what it might signpost for future releases in our latest YouTube video, which you can watch via the embed below. Plus, you’ll get to see Matthew’s best impression of the Chinese Mantis, making the video well worth a watch for that alone.
