LEGO Ideas project hits 10,000 votes at the worst possible moment

A LEGO Ideas project a year in the making has reached the second 2024 review at pretty much the worst possible moment.

Liam Spall (also known as LEGOParadise on LEGO Ideas) is no stranger to the crowdsourcing platform, having already taken a working waterfall, bowling alley and mini golf course to the review stage. Following flat-out rejections for all three of those, he’s back with another 10K project in the second 2024 review – but its timing genuinely couldn’t be any worse.

The LEGO Ideas team has just announced the results of the third 2023 review, approving Alex Sahli’s Italian Riviera for production as an official set. And Liam’s latest project to rack up 10,000 votes is… a model of the Italian Riviera. It’s a slightly different take on Italian cliffside towns to Alex’s successful submission, but it’s now doomed to fail regardless given it hews so closely in subject matter to an approved product.

Liam first uploaded his Italian Riviera to LEGO Ideas on August 9, 2023, so it’s taken almost exactly a year to reach the required 10,000 votes to progress to the review stage. By contrast, Alex spent around 18 months gathering support for his build, which moved into the third 2023 review on December 24, 2023. In doing so, the 18-year-old ultimately pipped Liam to the post.

No prizes for guessing which way this one will go in the second 2024 review then, but there at least plenty of other projects in contention this round.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
