Rumoured LEGO Lamborghini Countach has its work cut out

The rumoured LEGO 10337 Lamborghini Countach has its work cut out for it before it’s even hit shelves, all thanks to a sublime version of the car that’s already available if you know where to look…

Reported to be racing on to shelves on July 1 for $179.99 (according to itavixbrix via Brick Clicker), 10337 Lamborghini Countach is said to be the next addition to the ever-growing LEGO Icons garage. That means it will likely come in at the same scale as 10265 Ford Mustang, 10321 Corvette and so on. But the iconic ‘70s car and its wedge-shaped shell is actually already achievable in LEGO at that size. All you need is a copy of 10295 Porsche 911.

If you were to attempt some sort of site-wide analysis of Rebrickable, you’d probably find that a significant portion of the alternate builds hosted through the LEGO fan site are cars. Whether at eight-studs-wide Speed Champions scale or at the larger Creator Expert/Icons level, petrolheads have no shortage of custom or alternative builds to fill their LEGO garages. And among those is Firas Abu-Jaber’s stunning Lamborghini Countach.

Designed and built entirely from elements included in 10295 Porsche 911, this is one of the greatest and most accessible alternate builds around, well, anywhere. All you need to do is snag a copy of 2021’s LEGO Icons roadster and download the instructions for the Countach from Rebrickable, and you’re good to go. You can check out our build-through of the model for a closer look at how it runs, but suffice to say that there are only really a couple of places where additional parts would help.

Otherwise, it’s pretty crazy how well the parts from the Porsche can be refashioned into a Countach, and it means that the LEGO Group’s official model – if it exists as rumoured – is already facing a pretty steep uphill battle. You can imagine that an official set would have the benefit of new parts or recolours to really perfect those finer details and smooth out the lines, but it’s actually pretty tricky to find many areas of Firas’s model that need serious improvement.

Of course, the price difference between 10295 Porsche 911 and 10337 Lamborghini Countach works in the new set’s favour: the Lambo is said to be only $10 more expensive than the Porsche, so by the time you’ve factored in the cost of Firas’s instructions, most people will shoot for the official model anyway. But if you’ve already built Firas’s Countach, or have a copy of 10295 Porsche 911 sitting around, you might find it difficult to justify shelling out for a version that might only be marginally better than this custom model.

We’ll find out for sure – and hopefully be able to compare the two – if and when the LEGO Group pulls back the curtain on 10337 Lamborghini Countach. Until it does, treat all details on this supposed set as unconfirmed…

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
