LEGO Legend of Zelda set sparks biggest social media reaction of 2024

The reveal of highly-anticipated new LEGO sets always gathers a lot of attention on social media – but no one’s done it quite like 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1.

Scrolling through the LEGO Group’s Instagram, you can clearly see which posts reveal exciting new sets. 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr pulled in almost 250,000 likes on the video teasing it, while a similar hint at the upcoming LEGO Wicked theme gathered an impressive 148,000 likes. You can expect similar levels of hundreds of thousands of likes even for less typically popular themes, like LEGO Minions or Animal Crossing – but the reveal of 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 blows them all away.

The Instagram reel announcing the LEGO Legend of Zelda set hasn’t been up for 24 hours yet and has already gathered a whopping 484,000 likes, nearly double that of 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr. Over on reddit, the discussion around the set has already generated over 1,000 comments, putting 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr to shame once more, with just 600 comments on a post that’s been up for over two weeks.

All in all, it’s clear that people have plenty of thoughts and feelings to share about 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 – so let’s take a closer look at them.

Undoubted excitement…

From that massive reaction, it’s fairly evident that Zelda fans are excited for the franchise to make it into LEGO. Ever since the LEGO Group teamed up with Nintendo, Zelda has been near the top of people’s lists, with various LEGO Ideas projects and countless comments begging for the LEGO designers to turn their attention to the franchise.

Now that 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 is finally here, the first reactions tended to be ones of pure excitement, with one person writing on Instagram: “I’ve waited my whole life for this moment!”

“I love that you guys are…branching out…into new themes,” quipped another Instagram user. “I’m excited for this to come out in Sep-timber.”

…paired with inevitable price grumbles

However, the second look brought with it another emotion: shock, specifically over the price. 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 might be a welcome addition to the LEGO system but, priced at £259.99 $299.99 / €299.99, the vast majority of the comments on reddit go to the tune of ‘it’s nice, but…’

“A dream come true,” wrote one reddit user. “The price is way too high to swallow for me though, for what is essentially a really nice tree with some brilliant minifigures and new moulds.”

“For $50 more, you could get 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale which is PACKED with cool minifigures, awesome Easter eggs and secrets, an amazingly complex solid build, and with detail everywhere,” agreed another. “This set looks cheap and totally sounds like a cash grab.”

Does the high price come from Nintendo?

One theory as to why 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 might be so expensive is being attached to a global brand like Nintendo, with Zelda as one of its central IPs.

Disney tax doesn’t have anything on the Nintendo tax,” commiserated one LEGO fan on reddit. However, another person was quick to point out that other LEGO sets based on Nintendo IP haven’t been priced quite as high.

“Nintendo isn’t even the issue,” they wrote. “71411 The Mighty Bowser had 300 pieces more, was $30 cheaper, and was infinitely more impressive.”

Did 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 need to be 2-in-1?

Another argument, and perhaps the more likely one, is the fact that 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 is, as the name suggests, two sets in one. That means some of the 2,500 pieces will remain in the box, no matter which version you build – but still hike up the price.

“I’d be more interested to pay less for a set that was only the Ocarina of Time version rather than a 2-in-1,” complained one reddit user. “I don’t really see the point of making a large display set like this a 2-in-1. Who is gonna take this apart regularly?”

On the other hand, some LEGO fans are happy to have the choice of two different versions of the tree, with another person replying: “Nobody is going to take it apart, but this allows it to appeal to older collectors who want Ocarina of Time AND younger collectors who don’t know that version from 25 years ago but have played Breath of the Wild. Nobody would buy both versions if they released them separately.”

The minifigures steal the show

That’s not to say all the reactions are bad, however. A point that virtually everyone appears to agree on is that the minifigures of 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 are well-designed – even if that might be the only element they like.

“I really like the mini figures!” commented one person on reddit. “Not really feeling the set itself though.”

What’s more, even when complimenting the minifigures, many people just can’t get past the eye-watering price, writing: “I’m getting sick of the LEGO Group creating all these great minifigures and having these amazing IPs, only to wall them off behind super expensive sets.”

Dare we hope for a theme?

Even if there are some complaints about 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 specifically, people are without a doubt excited to see that Zelda has made it into the LEGO system. Unlike sets like 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr, which are housed under the LEGO Icons theme, the box branding suggests that 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 could be a theme all of its own, much like LEGO Super Mario

“If you look at the page on LEGO.com, it appears that it might be the beginning of a theme,” pointed out an eagle-eyed redditor. “This isn’t a LEGO Icons set, its a new theme on the site… I can hope…”

Of course, that’s not a guarantee of more sets down the line but it does leave the door open. Indeed, there’s plenty more fodder for inspiration from within the world of Zelda and, judging from fan comments, people are ready to put their money towards it.

“I want to like this a lot more than I do,” wrote one person. “I’ve said for a long time that I would pay an irresponsible amount of money for official Zelda LEGO sets, but I’m not blown away by this.

“The 2-in-1 concept is cool, with the different Links and Zeldas, but for $300, this isn’t what I was hoping for. And maybe this was never in the plans, but if this doesn’t sell well, I don’t see there being future Zelda sets.”

You can pre-order 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 right now for £259.99 / $299.99 / €299.99 on the official online store ahead of its release on September 1. Plus, take a closer look at the build here.
