LEGO Marvel technically has the first LEGO Fortnite set

The first LEGO Fortnite sets are launching later this year, but technically the game is featured in one set that precedes all others in the new theme.

LEGO Fortnite is becoming a full theme starting in October with the launch of four new models, including 77072 Peely Bone and 77073 Battle Bus, bringing the game to life physically following the start of the LEGO Group’s massive partnership with Epic Games.

While there’s plenty of excitement regarding these upcoming sets, they’re not the first LEGO Fortnite models and there was even one before 5008257 Llama.

Before the LEGO Group’s partnership with Epic Games started, there were sets released tying into Avengers: Endgame in 2021, including 76200 Bro Thor’s New Asgard. The scene that this set is based on features Korg playing a little-known game known as Fortnite, complaining about another player.

That exact moment is recreated in 76200 Bro Thor’s New Asgard and while the LEGO Group’s partnership with Fortnite had not started at the time, the designers managed to sneak the game into the set on the stickered TV.

As pictured in our detailed review, the game on the TV is eerily similar to Fortnite, from the animation of the player character and that they’re wielding an axe to the in-game chat sidebar, which would usually appear on the right in Fortnite. The heads-up display also includes a collection of items on the bottom right, just like in Fortnite.

Given the context of the scene and the sticker design, there’s little doubt that the LEGO Marvel design team attempted to elude to the popular game at the time, despite the fact that they were not yet affiliated with Fortnite officially.

Now, it’s evidence that LEGO Fortnite technically existed before the LEGO Fortnite theme, which finally arrives later this year. This does mean though that Fortnite in LEGO sets has come full circle, starting with 76200 Bro Thor’s New Asgard and ending with the likes of 77073 Battle Bus.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
