New LEGO Pixar shorts at D23 could be promising

A surprise announcement for LEGO enthusiasts at D23 is a series of Pixar shorts that could be a promising sign of things to come.

The LEGO Group’s ongoing relationship with Disney has been fruitful as far as sets and minifigures are concerned but the coverage of Pixar movies has been notably limited to a select few franchises.

At least, that was the case until lately as the coverage expanded in 2023 for the 100th anniversary of Disney. This included the debut of builds for Finding Nemo, Up and minifigures for Coco.

In 2024, we also had a couple of builds for Inside Out just before its sequel went on to become one of the most successful animated movies ever made. Things are improving for LEGO Pixar and while there are still several themes to cover, there might be a reason to get excited.

One of two LEGO-specific panels at D23 is confirmed to reveal some new LEGO Pixar shorts. D23 starts later this week and we’re not sure exactly what characters will feature in the shorts at the time of writing.

The likes of Inside Out, Toy Story and Brave could be safe picks but there’s at least a chance that they might reference Elemental, Onward and Turning Red too.

Even should they only stick to material that has been featured in LEGO sets – or just to Toy Story – these are a good sign following 2023 that the LEGO Group is increasing the scope of Pixar in the LEGO portfolio. With any luck, we might get more models like 43217 ‘Up’ House in the years to come.

Either way, D23 is shaping up to be an exciting event for LEGO enthusiasts with these two panels and the likely chance of major news for Marvel and Star Wars. It all starts from August 9 to 11, and you can find out more about the non-LEGO panels by clicking here

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
