LEGO plans to accelerate spending on sustainability in second half of 2024

The LEGO Group offers an update on sustainability initiatives so far in 2024, with one eye on planned ‘accelerated spending’ in the coming months.

There are various arms and branches of the LEGO Group’s efforts to become a more sustainable company, ranging from reducing greenhouse gas emissions to making the production of the iconic bricks more eco-friendly. One area that the company is seeking to improve on is the amount of resin purchased from sustainable sources.

The LEGO Group increased this amount in the first six months of the year, rising from 12% sourced from renewable and sustainable sources in 2023 to 22% in the first half of 2024. This is one step closer to achieving the goal of purchasing more than half of its raw materials from sustainable sources, reducing the use of fossil materials.

Elsewhere, the LEGO Group also increased the focus on activity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In 2024 so far, initiatives included launching a new Supplier Sustainability Programme that requires suppliers to set targets to reduce emissions by 2026, and further by 2028, as well as an annual carbon emissions reduction KPI linked to employee bonuses.

To extend the lifetime use of LEGO bricks, the LEGO brick takeback programme, LEGO Replay, was also expanded to the UK and pilot models continued in the USA and Europe.

With sustainable goals still to be met by continuing initiatives like this, the LEGO Group plans to further accelerate spending on sustainaiblity initiatives in the second half of the year, as sales and profits continue to soar for the company.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
