LEGO has managed to sneak a hidden mech into its 2024 range

2024 is already shaping up to be the year of LEGO mechs, but the designers have managed to sneak one more mech into the January line-up that you probably won’t have spotted…

How many mechs can one toy company squeeze into a single assortment? Well, at least 14, counting up those revealed for next year so far. Those span themes including City, NINJAGO, Marvel, Spidey and His Amazing Friends, Monkie Kid and more, across sets such as 71807 Sora’s Elemental Tech Mech, 76277 War Machine Mech Armor and 80053 Mei’s Dragon Mech.

But even where you don’t expect there to be mechs, they appear like clockwork. This much is true of the January 2024 Creator 3-in-1 range, which otherwise runs the gamut of displayable objects – from a retro camera to a colourful ukulele. Hitting new heights for the series in many ways, the upcoming wave takes the theme to bold new places… and also very familiar territory.

While it wasn’t shown off in official product imagery for the set, early reviews of 31152 Space Astronaut have revealed that the primary build for the Creator 3-in-1 set is secretly a mech in disguise. The buildable astronaut’s shiny gold visor flips down to expose space for a minifigure to sit at a control panel, Inside Out-style, manoeuvring the giant space explorer like some kind of enormous mech suit.

The set doesn’t include a minifigure, but Brickset has perched a relevant pilot at the controls to demonstrate the set’s mech-like qualities. Given this Easter egg is nestled away behind the astronaut’s visor, and not immediately noticeable when the helmet is fully closed, this is perhaps not quite as obviously a mech as anything else in the 2024 line-up – so it shouldn’t be the kind of thing that turns off anyone already up to their eyeballs in LEGO mechs.

Instead, it’s just a neat, playable addition to a set that is otherwise designed primarily for display (the stand is a bit of a giveaway). But it does take the total tally of LEGO mechs for 2024 to 15, if anyone’s keeping count…

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
