LEGO Speed Champions is on track to break a new record in 2024

2024 is shaping up to be the biggest year yet for eight-wide LEGO Speed Champions cars, with a record number of vehicles rumoured to be racing on to shelves in the next six months.

Since the racing theme shifted gears to eight-wide cars in 2020, it’s settled into a relatively predictable formula: sets consist of either one or two vehicles, with few (if any) extraneous builds or accessories. (In fact, the last side-builds arrived in 2020’s 76898 Formula E Panasonic Jaguar Racing GEN2 Car & Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY and 76899 Lamborghini Urus ST-X & Huracán Super Trofeo EVO.)

A polybag has also debuted among the main wave for the past three years, rounding out a portfolio that has only really been shaken up with the advent of movie-inspired cars in 2022. And since 2020, the maximum number of individual minifigure-scale vehicles that have joined the LEGO Speed Champions garage within any one calendar year is nine, in both 2021 and 2022. Only six new cars joined the track in 2023.

2024 looks to be racing back to the lofty heights of years previous, however, and potentially even surpassing them. At the moment, a total of four individual cars have been confirmed for release in March across three different sets: 76920 Ford Mustang Dark Horse, 76921 Audi S1 e-tron quattro and 76922 BMW M4 GT3 & BMW M Hybrid V8. A fifth car is said to launch at the same time in 76919 McLaren Formula 1 Race Car, but has yet to be officially revealed.

Fresh rumours now suggest that a summer wave of LEGO Speed Champions is on the cards for 2024 too. The last time we saw more than one vehicle launch outside the usual March window was in August 2022, when 76911 007 Aston Martin DB5 and 76912 Fast & Furious 1970 Dodge Charger R/T marked the introduction of Speed Champions sets inspired by silver-screen roadsters.

76917 2 Fast 2 Furious Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34) then dropped in January 2023, two months ahead of last year’s other LEGO Speed Champions sets. That suggests these bonus releases in summer 2024 could also be anchored to movies – but what’s potentially more interesting at this stage, with no other concrete details to go on, is that there could be as many as five cars across the rumoured June wave.

According to information provided by 1414falconfan (via maxbautde) on Instagram, the three LEGO Speed Champions summer 2024 sets will retail for $26.99, $49.99 and $49.99 respectively. Those price tags suggest we’re looking at one solo car and two double-packs. That would bring the total number of LEGO Speed Champions vehicles in 2024 up to 10 – or a record for a single calendar year.

Following a relatively stunted number of sets and cars in 2023 compared to previous years, that bolstered portfolio would be a welcome sight for LEGO Speed Champions collectors. Whether it actually comes to fruition will depend on whether these rumours pan out as expected. We’ll find out for sure later this year, but take them with the customary pinch of salt for now.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.

Looking forward to the new Speed Champions releases. Are the rumoured June release set numbers correct? Or should they be 76923, 76924 and 76925 to follow the March release set numbers?
