LEGO Star Wars’ Captain Rex ran kama-free so Dune’s Baron Harkonnen could fly

LEGO Icons 10327 Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter has made quite the splash after its reveal – with one minifigure in particular catching people’s attention.

The newly-revealed LEGO Icons set comes with eight impressively detailed minifigures to populate the swooshable main build of the Ornithopter itself. In particular, 10327 Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter’s inclusion of Baron Harkonnen, the primary antagonist from Dune, has grabbed people’s attention for one reason and one reason only: his abnormally long cloth robes.

Now, this is certainly movie-accurate. In the movie version of Dune, he does indeed float, with long robes giving him an imposing appearance. It’s a production decision that’s a departure from the books, however, where the villain does not float.

The LEGO Group’s recreation of this ability is to clothe his minifigure counterpart in long sweeping cloth robes, printed with the same pattern as the movies. However, the use of so much cloth has caused some people to wonder why the Baron has got so much of it – and why one character has so little.

With the reveal of 75367 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser, many LEGO Star Wars fans’ joy at seeing Captain Rex return turned to dismay when they saw he had only a printed kama, rather than a cloth one. The LEGO Group has since explained why this came about, but seeing the Baron’s long, sweeping robes appears to have reopened a wound for some LEGO Star Wars fans.

“No way they gave that long [minifigure] a cape and not Rex,” commented one person on the LEGO Group’s official reveal of 10327 Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter on Instagram, while another added: “So this is where the budget of the Star Wars kamas have been going to”.

“How can you make that long cloth piece but aren’t able to give Captain Rex a waist cape?” asked yet another commenter. Of course, the reason Rex doesn’t have a kama isn’t due to a lack of materials at LEGO HQ; it’s more about consistency and ease of use for children. Still, it smarts a little for any LEGO Star Wars fan (including us) to see LEGO Dune get so much kama-ready cloth when LEGO Star Wars Clone Troopers are still lacking.

In another corner of the comment section, there are also LEGO fans who aren’t involved in Dune or Star Wars who are quite simply confused as to what on earth is going on with such a long minifigure. Put simply: “I’ve never seen this movie, why is that guy long?”
