LEGO Super Mario minifigures may not be in our future

LEGO Super Mario’s next 18+ build debuts a new concept into the theme but there’s still no sign of minifigures based on the classic games.

After four years of LEGO Super Mario, there’s still no sign of minifigures in the theme’s standard course-building models or in its massive 18+ sets. The recent reveal of 71438 Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi makes the intentions for the theme clear too, adding another action tag for the interactive Mario, Luigi and Peach figures to react to.

While none of the theme’s 18+ sets have needed or would have necessarily been a good fit for minifigures so far, the sheer variety of the massive models indicates that there’s no room or aims to debut them in the near future.

So far, LEGO Super Mario’s biggest builds have included a puppet-like Bowser figure, an animated Super Mario World sprite, a decorative Piranha Plant, a recreation of the Nintendo Entertainment System and a tribute build for Super Mario 64 with miniature Mario figures.

Aside from 71374 Nintendo Entertainment System as suggested by 10306 Atari 2600, there’s no need for a minifigure in any of those models but almost all of them include an action tag for the interactive Super Mario figures.

At this point, it might be wise to forego any hopes of LEGO Super Mario minifigures in the near future and with any luck, we can be pleasantly surprised one day. That’s despite LEGO The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing instantly debuting minifigures based on their games with specialised parts to boot.

The future of LEGO Super Mario is mostly unknown aside from the upcoming LEGO Mario Kart models, but those don’t seem to be scaled for minifigures either. Despite the lack of minifigures and any sign thereof in the future, LEGO Super Mario’s designers are at least continuing to innovate with the 18+ builds, introducing new and unexpected concepts.

San Diego Comic-Con’s 71438 Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi is an impressively animated sprite recreation despite being a physical brick-built sculpture and not code in a video game. It may be that the theme doesn’t need minifigures after so many years on shelves, instead aiming to impress through its build and continuing to explore the potential of the course-building system.

It’s interesting to see LEGO Animal Crossing and LEGO The Legend of Zelda opting for a different strategy from the start though and we can only hope that they influence the LEGO Super Mario team in the future. For now, LEGO Super Mario still shows no sign of debuting any minifigures and you can pre-order 71438 Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi online now.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
