A great LEGO The Lord of the Rings Balrog is just two sets away

Making an accurate LEGO The Lord of the Rings Balrog figure may be easier than expected using just inexpensive LEGO sets.

LEGO The Lord of the Rings has been back for a couple of years now, including only massive models at the time of writing aside from a range of BrickHeadz. Of the BrickHeadz selection, 40631 Gandalf the Grey & Balrog offers the only official physical model of the Balrog to date. Thankfully, the BrickHeadz caricature can be upgraded to be much more desirable.

MiniSuperHeroesToday has devised a custom Balrog figure using two inexpensive sets that, when combined, is much more accurate than 40631 Gandalf the Grey & Balrog alone.

76289 Thor vs. Surtur Construction Figure acts as a great base for the upgraded Balrog though the head remains jarring compared to the rest of the design. The wings lend themselves to this design much more effectively. Switching the BrickHeadz eyes out for transparent 1×1 round tiles might help the head’s appearance.

Either way, it’s an impressive effort that is surprisingly easy for anyone to achieve by combining 40631 Gandalf the Grey & Balrog and 76289 Thor vs. Surtur Construction Figure. Be aware that the BrickHeadz double pack is retiring in a few months.

The custom Balrog figure should display well next to 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell and 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr and a Gandalf minifigure is included in the former as well to complete the scene.

A LEGO rumour source has also teased another LEGO The Lord of the Rings set for next year, though nothing is confirmed at the time of writing.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
