LEGO Wicked’s biggest set is secretly for ‘90s Space fans

Don’t write off those LEGO Wicked sets just yet, as the musical movie’s biggest model has a few surprises for Classic Space fans of a certain vintage…

Even in LEGO sets that aren’t designed explicitly for you there’s often something fun to discover, and the same can be said of the newly-revealed wave of LEGO Wicked sets. While they’re anchored around mini-dolls and seem to offer a lot to a very specific target audience at face value, there are a few fun features and surprises nestled among these sets for the wider LEGO community.

We’ve already touched on the Elphaba mini-doll’s versatility within the Marvel universe, for example, while anyone busy building a shrine to Jeff Goldblum will find a new addition to their ranks among these sets. But 75684 Welcome to Emerald City also has a handful of pieces that should make LEGO Classic Space fans happy – chief among whom is the set’s designer, Wes Talbott.

Posting on Instagram, Wes revealed that former LEGO designer James May sketched out a general layout for the towering city structure before handing over the reins. At that point, the team received better reference material for the elaborate swirling glass, which allowed Wes and graphic designer Julie Sode to really hone in on the structure’s finer details.

The Emerald City couldn’t come to life without plenty of trans-dark green, though – a colour core to classic ‘90s LEGO Space subtheme Space Police II. And Wes says that as a fan of the subtheme, he was ‘excited to make a handful of trans-dark green colour changes to achieve the look’. Those include 2×2 domes, 3x6x1 windscreens and the large palm leaves, the latter of which also appear in 75682 Elphaba & Glinda Figures.

All of those pieces are moulded in trans-dark green for the first time across these three Wicked sets, and the windscreens in particular should expand the scope of what’s possible for modern LEGO Space Police II vehicles in 2024 and beyond. Fingers crossed those specific elements show up on Pick a Brick in early 2025 to make them a little easier to amass in greater numbers.

If you want to get your hands on them before then, you’ll need to keep an eye out for the LEGO Wicked sets when they land on shelves in October. Head here for more images of the full range.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
