LEGO’s predictions for paper packaging appear to be confirmed
A recent sighting of paper packaging in a LEGO Speed Champions set confirms the LEGO Group’s CEO’s recent promise about the timeline for the switch.
Just a few weeks ago in August, LEGO Group CEO Niels B. Christiansen confirmed to Brick Fanatics that the company is “on track” to meet goals to make its packaging sustainable by 2025.
“We are literally, as we speak, changing a lot of production machines throughout all our factories to make this happen,” said Mr Christiansen. “It’s not an easy task, but it’s now in execution. We know what to do, we are investing behind it and you will already now start to see some paper bags in Europe.”
Just over a month after this, paper packaging has indeed apparently appeared in Europe, with one reddit user who seems to be based in Germany, PRB15, sharing a picture of paper bags being used for their LEGO Speed Champions 76915 Pagani Utopia.
“This is the first time I’ve encountered the paper packaging since it was announced,” they wrote in their post. “I also have the other 2023 Speed Champions sets and they all had plastic bags.”
While some LEGO fans have reservations about paper packaging, with fears that the plastic elements inside could become damaged in transit or in storage, these worries don’t appear to hold substance in this instance at least. When asked in a comment whether the pieces inside were scratched at all, the redditor replied: “I didn’t notice any. The inside of the bags felt like wax paper.”
There are other potential issues associated with paper packaging, with earlier testing revealed that paper packaging doesn’t suit all types of LEGO products, such as blind bags for Collectible Minifigures. However, seeing as 90% of plastics are never recycled or reused, cutting down on single-use plastics is vital for the health of marine life, our own food systems, and the global climate as a whole. Seeing as LEGO products are obviously centred around plastic, any effort from the LEGO Group to reduce plastic in packaging will surely go a long way.
