Life-sized LEGO mallard quacks its way to 10K on LEGO Ideas

The latest LEGO Ideas project to quack its way to the review stage is a life-sized duck, which recreates a mallard with a traditional studs-first LEGO aesthetic.

Ten-thousand LEGO Ideas users have pledged their support for AmbientFive23’s Mallard, which will now progress to the second 2024 review and could one day become an official LEGO set. The builder says the mallard is an ‘iconic subject’ for a LEGO set owing to its ‘vibrant plumage’, which they’ve captured using a range of different colours in this retro LEGO sculpture style.

Eschewing the kinds of modern parts and techniques we’ve seen in recent creature builds like 21349 Tuxedo Cat and 21342 The Insect Collection, AmbientFive23’s mallard instead guns for an aesthetic that wouldn’t be out of place at LEGOLAND, evoking traditional sculpted builds that show their studs loud and proud. The builder says their aim with the model is to ‘foster appreciation for waterfowl and wildlife’s role in natural ecosystems’.

Whether the mallard ends up on store shelves is now up to the LEGO Ideas review board, which will pass judgement on the project as part of the second 2024 review (the results of which we’ll likely learn in early 2025). The duck joins another 27 submissions in this review stage so far.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
