New LEGO Pixar shorts finally make good on brick-built Easter egg

Most Pixar films feature a reference to a Toy Story vehicle, and the LEGO Group hasn’t managed to continue this trend though that’s changing soon.

The iconic Pizza Planet truck is one of the most featured Easter eggs in the film industry, having made cameo appearances in almost every Pixar movie to date. Despite this, it only appears in two LEGO sets – 5658 Pizza Planet Truck and 7598 Pizza Planet Truck Rescue – and the LEGO The Incredibles video game.

Those models were released over a decade ago, but the Pizza Planet Truck has continued to appear in movies since. Now, details of new LEGO Pixar shorts have been revealed at D23, confirming that the brick-built truck is back in a third form.

The five shorts have no confirmed release date at the time of writing but early previews of them at D23 confirm that the shorts for The Incredibles and Cars will feature the Pizza Planet truck in a new design to blend in with the scale of the characters.

Between the three versions of the truck, it’s interesting to see that the new model is closer to the DUPLO set with its printed rocket rather than recreating it with smaller pieces.

It’s surprising to see that this is only the third build for the Pizza Planet Truck and it likely won’t be released physically given the lack of Cars sets in recent years. It demonstrates though that with help from Pixar, the LEGO Group is improving the ratio of LEGO Pixar content to appearances of the Pizza Planet Truck, stepping closer to that of the films.

We’ll probably never get to the point where every LEGO Pixar set has the truck hidden somewhere as an Easter egg, but hopefully, these new shorts aren’t far from release to bring us new LEGO Pixar content at least. Hopefully, a release date for them will be announced soon as it seems work is well underway on them.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
